26	26	An Act ensuring student representation, Aidan's law.
27	27	Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority
28	28	of the same, as follows:
29	29	1 Chapter 71 of the General Laws is hereby amended by striking out section 38M and
30	30	2inserting in place thereof the following section:-
31	31	3 Section 38M. School committees of cities, towns and regional school districts shall meet
32	32	4at least once every other month, during the months school is in session, with a student advisory
33	33	5committee to consist of five members to be composed of students elected by the student body of
34	34	6the high school or high schools in each city, town or regional school district.
35	35	7 The board of the trustees of a charter school, as defined in section 89, shall meet at least
36	36	8once every other month, during the months school is in session, with a student advisory
37	37	9committee to consist of five members to be composed of students elected by the student body of
38	38	10the charter school.
39	39	11 The members of such student advisory committees shall, by majority vote prior to the
40	40	12first day of June in each year elect from their number a chairperson who shall serve for a term of 2 of 2
41	41	13one year. Said chairperson shall be an ex-officio, nonvoting member of the school committee of
42	42	14the city, town or regional school district or as an ex-officio, nonvoting member of the board of
43	43	15the trustees of the charter school. Said ex-officio members shall have no right to attend executive
44	44	16sessions unless such right is expressly granted by the individual school committee or board of
45	45	17trustees. Said chairperson shall be subject to all school committee or board of trustee rules and
46	46	18regulations and shall serve without compensation.
47	47	19 A school committee of a city, town or regional school district or the board of trustees of a
48	48	20charter school may designate a student outreach coordinator for the purpose of ensuring the
49	49	21establishment of a student advisory committee and regularly informing the advisory committee
50	50	22of the school committee's or board of trustee’s agenda.
