An Act relative to insurance coverage for medically necessary tattoos.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority 
of the same, as follows:
1 Chapter 175 of the General Laws is hereby amended by inserting after Section 47UU the 
2following section:
3 Section 47VV. (a) For the purposes of this section, the following term shall have the 
4following meaning unless the context clearly requires otherwise:
5 “medical tattoo”, a medically necessary tattoo used to restore the appearance of a 
6patient’s skin, conceal surface defects, or mark the treatment site of a patient.
7 (b) Any policy, contract, agreement, plan or certificate of insurance issued, delivered or 
8renewed within or without 	the commonwealth shall provide coverage for medical tattoos when 
9deemed medically necessary by a physician. The commissioner shall promulgate regulations to 
10implement this section.
