The Commonwealth of Massachusetts _______________ In the One Hundred and Ninety-Fourth General Court (2025-2026) _______________ An Act relative to locksmiths and notice to property owners. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows: 1 Section 26 of chapter 186 of the General Laws as so appearing in the 2022 Official 2Edition is hereby amended by inserting the following paragraph: 3 (g) Any locksmith retained to change locks on a rental property shall first make a good 4faith effort to determine whether the landlord or property owner has received notice of the 5request. The locksmith shall also determine if the rental agreement requires that the owner retain 6a key to the leased residential premises and if so, shall make a good faith effort to provide a key 7to the new locks to the owner within 2 business days of the locks being changed.
