25	25	An Act relative to fire safety.
26	26	Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority
27	27	of the same, as follows:
28	28	1 SECTION 1. Section 81 of Chapter 146 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 2022
29	29	2Official Edition, is hereby amended in line 13 by inserting the following after the words “twenty-
30	30	3two.”: “Direct supervision” for the purpose of work on a fire protection sprinkler system shall
31	31	4mean the physical on-site presence with the assigned apprentice and their supervising
32	32	5journeyman or fire protection sprinkler contractor.”
33	33	6 SECTION 2. Section 85A of Chapter 146 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 2022
34	34	7Official Edition, is hereby amended in line 2 by striking the word “his” and inserting in place
35	35	8thereof the following: “their”;
36	36	9 SECTION 3. Section 85A of Chapter 146 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 2022
37	37	10Official Edition, is hereby amended in line 4 by striking the word “he” and inserting in place

40	40	13Official Edition, is hereby amended in line 6 by striking the word “his” and inserting in place
41	41	14thereof the following: “their”;
42	42	15 SECTION 5. Section 85A of Chapter 146 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 2022
43	43	16Official Edition, is hereby amended in line 7 by striking the word “he is” and inserting in place
44	44	17thereof the following: “they are”;

46	46	19Official Edition, is hereby amended in line 7 by striking the word “his” and inserting in place

49	49	22Official Edition, is hereby amended in line 8 by striking the word “his” and inserting in place

52	52	25Official Edition, is hereby amended in line 10 by striking the word “him” and inserting in place

54	54	27 SECTION 9. Section 85A of Chapter 146 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 2022
55	55	28Official Edition, is hereby amended by inserting in line 14 after the word “fitter.” the following:
56	56	29“Direct supervision” for the purposes of this section shall mean the physical on-site presence
57	57	30with the assigned apprentice and their supervising journeyman or fire protection sprinkler
58	58	31contractor while conducting work on a fire protection sprinkler system.” 3 of 3
59	59	32 SECTION 10. Section 85A of Chapter 146 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 2022
60	60	33Official Edition, is hereby amended by striking the following in lines 14-16: “A fire protection
61	61	34sprinkler contractor may employ one or more apprentices but not more than one apprentice may
62	62	35be so employed for each journeyman sprinkler fitter.”
63	63	36 SECTION 11. Section 85A of Chapter 146 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 2022
64	64	37Official Edition, is hereby amended by inserting in line 14 after the word “fitter.” the following:
65	65	38“The ratio permitted shall be one licensed journeyman sprinkler fitter or fire protection sprinkler
66	66	39contractor for every apprentice sprinkler fitter on the jobsite.”
67	67	40 SECTION 12. Section 89 of Chapter 146 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 2022
68	68	41Official Edition, is hereby amended in line 4 after the word “eighty-one” by inserting the
69	69	42following: “including sections eighty-four through eighty-six,”.
