1919 FOR the purpose of affirming the Maryland General Assembly’s support for the enactment 4
2020 of the Francis G. Newlands Memorial Removal Act by the United States Congress; 5
2121 and generally relating to the removal of certain items from the Francis G. Newlands 6

2424 WHEREAS, U.S. Senate Bill S. 3515 and U.S. House of Representatives Bill H.R. 8
2525 1256 direct the U.S. Department of the Interior to remove a plaque bearing the name 9
2626 “Senator Francis G. Newlands”, a projection bearing the name “Francis Griffith Newlands”, 10
2727 and a carving with the name “Newlands Memorial Fountain” from the Francis Griffith 11
2828 Newlands Memorial Fountain, and require the Department to offer the items removed to 12
2929 descendants of Francis Griffith Newlands for a certain period and, if the items are not 13
3030 claimed by descendants of Francis Griffith Newlands, to maintain the items as federal 14
3131 property and accession of the items into the Rock Creek Park museum collection; and 15

3333 WHEREAS, The Francis G. Newlands Memorial is located at Chevy Chase Circle on 16
3434 the border between the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia; and 17

3636 WHEREAS, Francis Griffith Newlands fervently endorsed white supremacist 18
3737 values, which conflict with the values of diversity, acceptance, and inclusion that make our 19
3838 State great; now, therefore, be it 20

4040 RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, That the Maryland 21
4141 General Assembly affirms its support for the enactment of the Francis G. Newlands 22
4242 Memorial Removal Act as it was introduced in both chambers of the United States 23
