AN ACT concerning 
 
State Board of Dental Examiners – University of Maryland School of Dentistry 
Faculty – Qualifying for Examination 
 
FOR the purpose of altering the circumstances under which a dentist who is a faculty 
member at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and trained at a foreign 
dental school must be qualified by the State Board of Dental Examiners to take an 
examination offered by the American Board of Dental Examiners, Inc., or its 
successor organization; and generally relating to the qualifying of faculty members 
at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry by the State Board of Dental 
Examiners for examination. 
 
BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,

Section 4–306.1 
 Annotated Code of Maryland 
 (2021 Replacement Volume and 2022 Supplement) 
 
 SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, 
That the Laws of Maryland read as follows: 
 
Article – Health Occupations 
 
4–306.1. 
 
 (a) A dentist who is a faculty member at the University of Maryland School of 
Dentistry and was trained at a foreign dental school shall be qualified by the Board to take 
an examination offered by ADEX, as defined in § 4–306 of this subtitle, if the applicant: 
 
 (1) (I) 1. [Completes training in a dental specialty recognized by 
the Board; AND 
 
 (2)  2. Is board certified in a dental specialty recognized by the 
Board; OR 
 
 (3)] (II) IS A GENERAL D ENTIST WHO: 
 
 1. HAS SUCCESSFULLY COMP LETED: 
 
 A. A GENERAL DENTAL PRACT ICE RESIDENCY; OR

 B. ADVANCED EDUCATION IN A GENERAL DENTISTRY 
PROGRAM; OR 
 
 2. IS BOARD CERTIFIED BY THE AMERICAN BOARD OF 
GENERAL DENTISTRY; 
 
 (2) At the time the application is made, is a full–time faculty member at 
the University of Maryland School of Dentistry who has completed at least 7 consecutive 
years as a full–time faculty member; and 
 
 [(4)] (2) (3) Submits to the Board a written letter of support from the 
University of Maryland School of Dentistry stating that the school supports the applicant 
to take the ADEX examination. 
 
 (b) If the dentist receives a passing score on the ADEX examination, the dentist 
may apply for a general license to practice dentistry. 
 
 (c) A dentist who applied for a general license to practice dentistry under 
subsection (b) of this section and was issued a general license shall surrender the license if 
the dentist violates any provision of this title or any regulation adopted by the Board. 
 
 SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall take effect 
October 1, 2023.
