AN ACT concerning 1 
 
Baltimore City Sheriff – Staffing  2 
 
FOR the purpose of increasing the number of assistant sheriffs required to be appointed by 3 
the Baltimore City Sheriff; repealing a limitation on the number of certain other staff 4 
that the Baltimore City Sheriff may appoint; and generally relating to staff of the 5 
Baltimore City Sheriff. 6 
 
BY repealing and reenacting, without amendments, 7 
 Article – Courts and Judicial Proceedings 8

 SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, 17 
That the Laws of Maryland read as follows: 18 
 
Article – Courts and Judicial Proceedings 19 
 
2–316. 20  2 	HOUSE BILL 632  
 
 
 
 (a) This section applies only in Baltimore City. 1 
 
 (d) (1) The Sheriff shall appoint: 2 
 
 (i) An undersheriff or chief deputy sheriff; 3 
 
 (ii) [One] THREE assistant [sheriff] SHERIFFS; 4 
 
 (iii) Three deputy sheriff majors; 5 
 
 (iv) Three deputy sheriff captains; 6 
 
 (v) Six deputy sheriff lieutenants; 7 
 
 (vi) One secretary sheriff; and 8 
 
 (vii) One fiscal clerk sheriff. 9 
 
 (2) The Sheriff may appoint [up to a maximum of]: 10 
 
 (i) [9 deputy] DEPUTY sheriff sergeants; 11 
 
 (ii) [103 deputy] DEPUTY sheriffs; 12 
 
 (iii) [2 domestic] DOMESTIC violence clerks; [and] 13 
 
 (iv) [2 domestic] DOMESTIC violence advocates; 14 
 
 (V) SOCIAL WORKERS ; AND 15 
 
 (VI) ANY ADDITIONAL SWORN OR CIVILIAN PERSONNE L THAT 16 
ARE FUNDED BY THE SHERIFF’S OPERATING BUDGET O R BY ANY OTHER FUNDI NG 17 
SOURCE. 18 
 
 SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act s hall take effect 19 
October 1, 2023. 20
