Outman, Markkanen, Cavitt, Bierlein, Alexander and Rigas offered the following resolution: A resolution to declare October 2024 as Disability Employment Awareness Month in the state of Michigan. Whereas, Disability Employment Awareness Month is a national campaign that raises awareness about disability employment issues and celebrates the many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities; and Whereas, According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2020, the employment-population ratio for people with a disability was 17.9 percent, compared to 61.8 percent for those without a disability; and Whereas, The state of Michigan recognizes the importance of inclusive workplaces that welcome the talents of all people, including people with disabilities; and Whereas, The state of Michigan recognizes the many entities and organizations working to lower barriers of employment and empower those living with disabilities the ability to engage in meaningful employment; and Whereas, The state of Michigan recognizes a comprehensive list of named organizations is untenable in this resolution and applauds all organizations improving employment access to the dedicated and outstanding disabled workforce of Michigan; and Whereas, The state of Michigan recognizes, in the year of 2024, Michigan Rehabilitation Services, Corewell Health and Corewell Healths Disability Focused Business Resource Group Entitled AdaptAbilities, Disability Network Michigan, and Comprenew among the many organizations making Michigan a place for everyone to thrive; and Whereas, The state of Michigan is committed to promoting policies and practices that increase employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare October 2024 as Disability Employment Awareness Month in the state of Michigan; and be it further Resolved, That we commend this observance for all Michiganders and encourage citizens to learn more about disability employment issues and what they can do to support individuals with disabilities and their families.
