1-SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 28 Senators Anthony, Damoose, Geiss, Lauwers, Theis and Webber offered the following resolution: A resolution to designate April 2025 as Community College Month. Whereas, In Michigan, there are 28 community and three tribal colleges that are vital to our state?s post-secondary network, boosting access and affordability while driving workforce development; and Whereas, The dedicated leaders and staff of our community colleges deliver academic and technical coursework that culminates in industry-recognized credentials, equipping students with essential skills; and Whereas, Michigan?s community colleges help students navigate post-secondary education, identifying wrap-around support and resources to meet individual needs for continued success; and Whereas, Community colleges are imperative in Michigan?s goal to increase the number of working-age adults with a skill certificate or college degree to 60 percent by 2030, which is critical to our state?s evolving economy; and Whereas, Our community colleges enroll 283,000 students, grant 20,200 degrees each year, and 10,500 certificates each year, while 52 percent of students who earn bachelor?s degrees in Michigan have completed courses at a community college; and Whereas, Since its inception in February 2021, the Michigan Reconnect program has enabled more than 66,500 Michiganders, including 12,500 aged 21-24, to enroll in community or tribal colleges tuition-free, with over 8,100 individuals having successfully earned their credentials; and Whereas, The Michigan Achievement Scholarship Community College Guarantee has benefited over 18,000 students, saving families an average of over $2,100 per year, thereby expanding access to higher education and strengthening the state?s skilled workforce; and Whereas, The continued investment in community and tribal colleges will help meet the very real and immediate challenges of our student achievement, competitiveness, and economic development; and Whereas, Celebrating Community College Month underscores the indispensable role these institutions play in serving students in Michigan, while also highlighting their significant contributions to state progress through affordable education, practical training, and robust community support; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate, That the members of this legislative body designate April 2025 as Community College Month.
