                            1.1	A bill for an act​
1.2 relating to transportation; imposing mandatory fines for violations of the school​
1.3 bus stop arm law; amending Minnesota Statutes 2024, section 169.444, subdivision​

1.5BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:​
1.6 Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 2024, section 169.444, subdivision 2, is amended to read:​
1.7 Subd. 2.Violations by drivers; penalties.(a) A person who fails to stop a vehicle or​
1.8to keep it stopped, as required in subdivision 1, or who violates subdivision 1a, is guilty of​
1.9a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of: (1) not less than $500; (2) not less than $700 for a​
1.10violation occurring within ten years of a prior violation; or (3) not less than $950 for a​
1.11violation occurring within ten years of two or more prior violations.​
1.12 (b) A person is guilty of a gross misdemeanor if the person fails to stop a motor vehicle​
1.13or to keep it stopped, as required in subdivision 1, or who violates subdivision 1a, and​
1.14commits either or both of the following acts:​
1.15 (1) passes or attempts to pass the school bus in a motor vehicle on the right-hand,​
1.16passenger-door side of the bus; or​
1.17 (2) passes or attempts to pass the school bus in a motor vehicle when a school child is​
1.18outside of and on the street or highway used by the school bus or on the adjacent sidewalk.​
1.19 EFFECTIVE DATE.This section is effective August 1, 2025, and applies to violations​
1.20occurring on or after that date.​
