44 1.4BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:​
55 1.5 Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 2024, section 35.02, subdivision 1, is amended to read:​
66 1.6 Subdivision 1.Members; officers.The board has seven 11 members appointed by the​
77 1.7governor with the advice and consent of the senate, three of whom are producers of livestock​
88 1.8in the state; one of whom is a member of a federally recognized Tribe located in Minnesota​
99 1.9who is experienced in animal husbandry; and three of whom are practicing veterinarians​
1010 1.10licensed in Minnesota, one of whom specializes in companion animals two at-large members,​
1111 1.11one member who is a member of a federally recognized Tribe located in Minnesota, and​
1212 1.12eight regional members, with no two regional members residing in the same congressional​
1313 1.13district. Members must be knowledgeable in animal agriculture, animal health, or pets and​
1414 1.14companion animals, with at least two members who represent the public and are not employed​
1515 1.15in agriculture, veterinary medicine, the pet industry, or a related field. To the extent​
1616 1.16practicable, the governor's appointments must achieve gender and geographic balance among​
1717 1.17the board membership. The commissioners of agriculture, natural resources, and health, the​
1818 1.18dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, and the director of the Veterinary Diagnostic​
1919 1.19Laboratory of the University of Minnesota may shall serve as consultants to the board​
2020 1.20without vote. Appointments to fill unexpired terms must be made from the classes to which​
2121 1.21the retiring members belong. The board shall elect a president and a vice-president from​
2222 1.22among its members and. The governor shall appoint a veterinarian licensed in Minnesota​
