6 | 6 | | 1.6 Subdivision 1.Application.This section applies to persons who perform the functions |
---|
7 | 7 | | 1.7of a central service technician in a health care facility. |
---|
8 | 8 | | 1.8 Subd. 2.Definitions.For the purposes of this section, the following terms have the |
---|
9 | 9 | | 1.9meanings given: |
---|
10 | 10 | | 1.10 (1) "central service technician" means a person who decontaminates, inspects, assembles, |
---|
11 | 11 | | 1.11packages, and sterilizes reusable medical instruments or devices being used by a health care |
---|
12 | 12 | | 1.12facility; |
---|
13 | 13 | | 1.13 (2) "health care practitioner" means a person licensed or registered under this chapter |
---|
14 | 14 | | 1.14and chapters 150A, 153, 153B, 154, 155A, and 156, including any intern, resident, fellow, |
---|
15 | 15 | | 1.15or medical officer who conducts or assists with the performance of surgery; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | 1.16 (3) "health care facility" means a hospital or ambulatory surgery center. |

17 | 17 | | 1.17 Subd. 3.Requirements for central service technician.(a) A health care facility shall |
---|
18 | 18 | | 1.18employ or otherwise retain the services of a central service technician only if the central |
---|
19 | 19 | | 1.19service technician: |
---|
20 | 20 | | 1.20 (1) has successfully passed a nationally accredited central service exam for central service |
---|
21 | 21 | | 1.21technicians and holds and maintains credentials administered by a nationally accredited |
---|

35 | 35 | | 2.6service technician by a health care facility on or before December 31, 2027. |

36 | 36 | | 2.7 (b) A central service technician who does not meet the requirements of paragraph (a), |
---|
37 | 37 | | 2.8clause (1), shall have 18 months from the date of hire to obtain a certified registered central |
---|
38 | 38 | | 2.9service technician credential, a certified endoscope reprocessor credential, a certified sterile |
---|
39 | 39 | | 2.10processing and distribution technician credential, or a certified flexible endoscope reprocessor |
---|
40 | 40 | | 2.11credential. |
---|
41 | 41 | | 2.12 (c) A person who qualifies to operate as a central service technician in a health care |
---|
42 | 42 | | 2.13facility under paragraph (a) must annually complete ten hours of continuing education |
---|
43 | 43 | | 2.14credits to remain qualified to operate as a central service technician. The continuing education |
---|
44 | 44 | | 2.15required under this paragraph must be related to the functions of a central service technician. |
---|
45 | 45 | | 2.16 (d) Nothing in this subdivision shall prohibit the following persons from performing the |
---|
46 | 46 | | 2.17tasks or functions of a central service technician: |
---|
47 | 47 | | 2.18 (1) a health care practitioner; |
---|
48 | 48 | | 2.19 (2) a person who holds or maintains a registration, certification, or license by a nationally |
---|
49 | 49 | | 2.20accredited credentialing organization to perform health care services; or |
---|
50 | 50 | | 2.21 (3) a student or intern performing the functions of a central service technician under the |
---|
51 | 51 | | 2.22direct supervision of a health care practitioner as part of the student's or intern's training or |
---|
52 | 52 | | 2.23internship. |
---|
53 | 53 | | 2.24 (e) A health care facility shall, upon the written request of a central service technician, |
---|
54 | 54 | | 2.25verify in writing the central service technician's dates of employment or the contract period |
---|
55 | 55 | | 2.26during which the central service technician provided services to the health care facility. |
---|
56 | 56 | | 2.27 EFFECTIVE DATE.This section is effective 180 days after final enactment. |
