66 1.6BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:​
77 1.7 Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 2024, section 609.66, is amended by adding a subdivision​
88 1.8to read:​
99 1.9 Subd. 1i.Misdemeanor; possession on county, city, or town property.(a)​
1010 1.10Notwithstanding sections 624.714, subdivision 23, and 624.717, the elected governing body​
1111 1.11of a local governmental unit may prohibit or restrict a person from possessing a dangerous​
1212 1.12weapon, ammunition, or explosives within a building or on land owned or leased by the​
1313 1.13local governmental unit, except as provided under subdivision 1g. Unless a person is​
1414 1.14otherwise prohibited or restricted by other law to possess a dangerous weapon, ammunition,​
1515 1.15or explosives, this subdivision does not apply to:​
1616 1.16 (1) licensed peace officers or military personnel who are performing official duties; or​
1717 1.17 (2) persons who possess dangerous weapons within a building or on land owned or​
1818 1.18leased by a local governmental unit with the express consent of the unit's chief law​
1919 1.19enforcement officer or governing body.​
2020 1.20 (b) A person who possesses a dangerous weapon, ammunition, or explosives within a​
2121 1.21building or on land owned or leased by a local governmental unit that has prohibited or​
2222 1.22restricted possession under paragraph (a) is guilty of a misdemeanor. Nothing in this section​

3333 2.3 (c) Signs prohibiting or restricting dangerous weapons, ammunition, and explosives​
3434 2.4must be posted on a building or land owned or leased by a local governmental unit. The​
3535 2.5sign must be conspicuous and prominently posted on the building or land and contain the​
3636 2.6following language: "(INDICATE IDENTITY OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENTAL​
3737 2.7UNIT) BANS GUNS (INDICATE IN THESE PREMISES OR ON THIS LAND."​
3838 2.8 (d) For the purposes of this subdivision:​
3939 2.9 (1) "conspicuous" means lettering in black arial typeface at least two inches in height​
4040 2.10against a bright contrasting background that is at least 187 square inches in area;​
4141 2.11 (2) "local governmental unit" means a county, statutory or home rule charter city, or​
4242 2.12town; and​
4343 2.13 (3) "prominently" means a sign is readily visible and:​
4444 2.14 (i) if placed on a building, is placed within four feet laterally of each entrance, with the​
4545 2.15bottom of the sign at a height of four to six feet above the floor or ground if placed outside​
4646 2.16the building; and​
4747 2.17 (ii) if placed on land, is placed at each roadway entry to the land and two signs placed​
4848 2.18within land less than three acres, three signs within land at least three acres and less than​
4949 2.19ten acres, and two additional signs for each additional ten acres of land greater than the first​
5050 2.20ten acres.​
5151 2.21 EFFECTIVE DATE.This section is effective August 1, 2025, and applies to crimes​
5252 2.22committed on or after that date.​
