9 | 9 | | Whereas, over sixteen million Americans served their |

10 | 10 | | country and the Allied powers over the course of the war; and |

11 | 11 | | Whereas, the generation of men and women who served our |
---|
12 | 12 | | country in World War II has been called the "greatest |
---|
13 | 13 | | generation" for their selfless sacrifice; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | Whereas, the Medal of Honor is the highest military |
---|
15 | 15 | | decoration that is awarded by the United States go vernment; |
---|

---|
17 | 17 | | Whereas, the Medal of Honor is presented by the |
---|
18 | 18 | | President of the United States, in the name of Congress; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | Whereas, the Medal of Honor is only conferred upon |
---|
20 | 20 | | members of the United States Armed Forces who distinguish |
---|
21 | 21 | | themselves through conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at |
---|
22 | 22 | | the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty while |
---|
23 | 23 | | engaged in action against an enemy of the United States, |
---|
24 | 24 | | while engaged in military operations involving conflict with |
---|
25 | 25 | | an opposing foreign force, or while serving with friendly |
---|
26 | 26 | | forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing |
---|
27 | 27 | | armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent |
---|
28 | 28 | | party; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | Whereas, more than 3,400 Medals of Honor have been |
---|
30 | 30 | | awarded to our nation's bravest soldie rs, sailors, airmen, |
---|
31 | 31 | | marines, and coast guardsmen since the creation of the award |
---|
32 | 32 | | in 1861; and |

34 | 34 | | Whereas, the Medal of Honor was awarded to 353 |

35 | 35 | | Americans during World War II; and |

36 | 36 | | Whereas, only one of those 353 Americans is alive |

38 | 38 | | Whereas, Hershel Woodrow Williams of West Virginia |
---|
39 | 39 | | served his country with conspicuous gallantry and |
---|
40 | 40 | | intrepidity at the risk of life and therefore deserves the |

41 | 41 | | gratitude of the American people; and |

42 | 42 | | Whereas, the President of the United States has t he |

43 | 43 | | sole authority to designate a state funeral; and |

44 | 44 | | Whereas, historically, the President of the United |
---|
45 | 45 | | States has designated state funerals for former presidents, |
---|
46 | 46 | | generals, and other extraordinary Americans; and |

47 | 47 | | Whereas, our nation is currentl y divided and yearns for |
---|
48 | 48 | | a unifying national event; and |
---|
49 | 49 | | Whereas, designating a state funeral when the last |
---|
50 | 50 | | surviving World War II Medal of Honor recipient dies would |
---|
51 | 51 | | be a wonderful way for the American people to unite and |
---|
52 | 52 | | honor all sixteen million soldiers, sailors, and airmen who |
---|
53 | 53 | | served in our Armed Forces from 1941 to 1945: |

54 | 54 | | Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved by the members of the |
---|
55 | 55 | | Missouri Senate, One Hundred First General Assembly, Second |
---|
56 | 56 | | Regular Session, the House of Representatives concurri ng |
---|
57 | 57 | | therein, hereby urge the President of the United States to |
---|
58 | 58 | | designate a state funeral for the last surviving Medal of |
---|
59 | 59 | | Honor recipient from World War II; and |
---|
60 | 60 | | Be It Further Resolved that the Secretary of the Senate |

61 | 61 | | be instructed to prepare a prope rly inscribed copy of this |
---|
62 | 62 | | resolution for the President of the United States, the Vice |
---|
63 | 63 | | President of the United States, the Speaker of the United |
---|
64 | 64 | | States House of Representatives, the President Pro Tempore |
