3	3	SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 34
4	4	Whereas, the Newtonia Battlefields, located in the
5	5	village of Newtonia, in Newton County, Missouri, was the
6	6	site of two Civil War battles; and
7	7	Whereas, the First Battle of Newtonia, occurring on
8	8	September 30, 1862, was the first battle in which organized
9	9	Union and Confederate regiments of American Indian soldiers
10	10	were directed to fight against each other; and
11	11	Whereas, the Second Battle of Newtonia, occurring on
12	12	October 28, 1864, was the final battle and defeat of
13	13	Confederate General Sterling Price's Missouri Expedition of
14	14	1864; and
15	15	Whereas, the Second Battle of Newtonia was the fina l
16	16	battle of the Civil War in the highly contested state of
17	17	Missouri and ensured that the state of Missouri remained
18	18	under Union control; and
19	19	Whereas, the historical importance of the Newtonia
20	20	Battlefields is exemplified by its designation on the
21	21	National Register of Historic Places; and
22	22	Whereas, it has been a priority of the local community
23	23	to maintain a high level of integrity of the site of the
24	24	Newtonia Battlefields; and
25	25	Whereas, the inclusion of the Newtonia Battlefields as
26	26	a part of the National Park Service will continue the
27	27	preservation of the site; and
28	28	Whereas, the history of the Newtonia Battlefields is
29	29	important to gaining a better understanding of the deadliest
30	30	war in United States history; and
31	31	Whereas, the expansion of the neighboring Wilson's
32	32	Creek National Battlefield to include the Newtonia
33	33	Battlefields will protect and enhance opportunities for the
34	34	2
35	35	public to learn about the historical significance of
36	36	Missouri and its citizens during the Civil War; and
37	37	Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved that the members of the
38	38	Missouri Senate, One Hundred First General Assembly, Second
39	39	Regular Session, the House of Representatives concurring
40	40	therein, hereby call on the United States Congress to enact
41	41	legislation allowing the United States Department of
42	42	Interior to increase the size of Wilson's Creek National
43	43	Battlefields to include the land containing the site of the
44	44	Newtonia Battlefields in order to preserve the history of
45	45	the Civil War; and
46	46	Be It Further Resolved that the members of the Missouri
47	47	General Assembly, hereby call on all members of the Missouri
48	48	Congressional delegation to lend their influence to the
49	49	enactment of legislation allowing for the addition of the
50	50	Newtonia Battlefields to the National Park System; and
51	51	Be It Further Resolved that the Secretary of the Senate
52	52	be instructed to prepare properly inscribed copies of this
53	53	resolution for each member of the Missouri Congressional
54	54	delegation.
