MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE 2025 Regular Session To: Rules By: Representatives Crudup, McMillan House Resolution 110 (As Adopted by House) A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING MADISON BOOKER FOR BEING NAMED THE SEC PLAYER OF THE YEAR AND AS A SEMIFINALIST FOR THE NAISMITH TROPHY. WHEREAS, Madison Booker, the 2024 First Team All-American and Cheryl Miller Award winner, was announced as the SEC Player of the Year and is a semifinalist for the Naismith Trophy, which goes to the national player of the year, and her SEC Player of the Year title marks back-to-back conference player of the year honors for Booker, who was the 2024 Big 12 Player of the Year as a freshman; and WHEREAS, a native of Ridgeland, Mississippi, Madison Booker was a tall, long-armed, sweet-shooting seventh grader in Mississippi when she started getting recruiting attention from college coaches, and among those coaches was then-Mississippi State coach Vic Schaefer, and while he would eventually head to Texas, he always kept a firm eye on the talented youngster draining fade-away jumpers back in Ridgeland; and WHEREAS, Madison eventually signed with Schaefer at the University of Texas, where she has delivered on the expectations that come with being one of the nation's elite recruits, and after leading the Longhorns to the Elite Eight as a freshman last season, she has pushed them to heights the program hasn't seen in more than 20 years; and WHEREAS, according to her coach, being a great player and living up to everyone's expectations is the most difficult thing to do, especially when she is preseason (All-American), getting everybody's best shot, and the first person talked about in the scouting report, but Madison did it with flying colors, and performed extremely well her freshman year; and WHEREAS, her freshman year, Madison, who was playing point guard after an injury to Rori Harmon, led Texas to win 33 games, the most for the program since the 1985-1986 national championship team won 34, and advanced to the Elite Eight, and she averaged 16.5 points and five rebounds that season and was the first freshman to win Big 12 Player of the Year; and WHEREAS, this season, Madison, who is now a 6-feet-1-inch sophomore, was able to slide back into her normal, creative role off the ball, and after slimming down in the off season, she is a leaner, quicker, more durable player who averages 16.2 points and 6.6 rebounds over 31 minutes per game as a part of a Texas offense that largely ignores 3-point shooting; and WHEREAS, additionally, Madison has also improved on defense, as Texas is one of the best defensive teams in the country and she has been a key part of that, averaging 1.6 steals per game; and WHEREAS, Madison has scored in double figures in 27 games and 20 or more points in 12 games this season, and she ranks second on the team in rebounding and has seven double-doubles on the season, and as an incredibly efficient player, she is shooting 45.9 percent from the field on the season, 43.9 percent from 3-point range and 82.9 percent from the free-throw line; and WHEREAS, Madison helped Texas win a Big 12 Tournament championship as a freshman last year and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament, and she led Texas to a SEC regular season championship this season; and WHEREAS, when discussing her SEC Player of the Year award, Madison thanked her teammates, her coaching staff, the Longhorn program, her support staff, her parents and friends, but most importantly, God, for the ability to get the award the first year Texas is in the SEC; and WHEREAS, while Madison got off to a slow start in SEC play this year, she flipped a switch after the first loss to South Carolina, and decided that she wasn't going to let anybody take her out of the game again, and her shift in play led Texas to a 15-game win streak following the initial loss; and WHEREAS, in the Longhorns last eight games against ranked opponents, including five wins against top-10 teams, Madison is averaging 20.5 points per game and 7.6 rebounds per game while shooting 45 percent from the field and 85 percent from the free-throw line; and WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and honor fine Mississippians, especially those such as Madison Booker, whose stellar performance at the University of Texas has brought great pride to the Ridgeland community and to the State of Mississippi: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Madison Booker for being named the SEC Player of the Year and as a semifinalist for the Naismith Trophy, and extend our most sincere wishes for continued success in all her future endeavors.
