1 | | - | MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE 2025 Regular Session To: Rules By: Representatives Varner, Shanks House Resolution 126 (As Adopted by House) A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE DISTINGUISHED PUBLIC SERVICE OF ASSISTANT CHIEF OSCAR WAYNE KING OF THE MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY CAPITOL POLICE UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT. WHEREAS, after 36 years of committed service to law enforcement in the State of Mississippi, including 30 years with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety Capitol Police, Assistant Chief Oscar Wayne King entered the honorable season of retirement on December 31, 2024, bringing to a close a storied career marked by sacrifice, skill and a steadfast devotion to the preservation of peace and the protection of life and property; and WHEREAS, Assistant Chief King, a dedicated and seasoned public servant, began his professional journey in June 1988 with the University of Mississippi Medical Center Police Department, where he swiftly demonstrated his aptitude for leadership and professionalism, graduating from the Mississippi Law Enforcement Training Academy in 1989 and later completing the Mississippi Certified Investigator Program, immediately distinguished himself as a principled officer committed to integrity, fairness and public service; and WHEREAS, committed to strengthening his impact and knowledge in the field of criminal justice, Assistant Chief King earned his degree in Criminal Justice Administration, equipping himself with the academic foundation necessary to navigate and lead within an evolving law enforcement landscape by broadening his expertise and deepening his commitment to professional development; and WHEREAS, in July 1994, Assistant Chief King joined the Capitol Police, and over the next three decades, rose through the ranks with distinction, serving in several key roles including Patrolman and Investigator, before being promoted in June 2012 to Assistant Chief, where he oversaw Administrative Services, including fleet operations, procurement and budgetary and accounting functions critical to ensuring the operational efficiency and fiscal accountability of the Capitol Police force; and WHEREAS, throughout his service, Assistant Chief King, a pillar of leadership, integrity and accountability, exemplified the highest standards of professional conduct and personal character, which earned him the distinct respect and confidence of his peers, subordinates and the broader law enforcement community for his calm demeanor, tactical acumen and tireless advocacy for officer readiness and the safety of public servants, state employees and Mississippi citizens alike; and WHEREAS, the role of law enforcement, though often unseen and underappreciated, demands tremendous personal sacrifice, and in carrying out his oath with courage and compassion, Assistant Chief King exemplified the best of those who protect the peace, daily placing himself at the intersection of duty and danger in service to the public good; and WHEREAS, his retirement marks the culmination of a remarkable career spent in service to others, where each day brought with it the inherent risk borne by all law enforcement officers, who bravely accept the charge to defend and protect, often without recognition, and always at personal sacrifice; and WHEREAS, beyond his professional duties, Assistant Chief King is a man of strong moral character and deep faith, residing in Richland, Mississippi, with his beloved wife, Terry, and serving as a Deacon and committee member at First Baptist Church Richland, where he remains active in ministry and community service; and WHEREAS, together, Chief and Mrs. King are the proud parents of three sons, and the even prouder grandparents of three grandsons, who will now benefit from the full measure of his time, wisdom and love in retirement; and WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend the remarkable and selfless services of law enforcement professionals of Assistant Chief King's caliber, whose career stands as a model of selfless service and professional excellence, deserving of honor for such unwavering devotion: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the distinguished public service of Assistant Chief Oscar Wayne King, congratulate him upon the occasion of his retirement, and extend sincere gratitude for his decades of courageous service and enduring contributions to the safety and welfare of Mississippi's citizens and public institutions.
