1 | 1 | | MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE 2025 Regular Session To: Rules By: Representative Powell House Resolution 127 A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE 2024-2025 JACKSON PREP PATRIOTS BASKETBALL TEAM FOR WINNING THE MIDSOUTH ASSOCIATION OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS (MAIS) OVERALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. WHEREAS, the 2024-2025 Jackson Prep Patriots Basketball Team reigned supreme at the Midsouth Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) Overall State Championship, claiming their third overall state championship title in the last four years; and WHEREAS, after beating Heritage Academy 64-53 in the first round of the tournament and scoring 79-41 against Hillcrest Christian in the quarterfinal game, the Patriots secured their place in the final championship match with a 51-45 victory against Hartfield Academy in the semifinals; and WHEREAS, on February 26, 2025, fans crowded the A.E. Wood Coliseum to watch as the Patriots battled against last year's overall championship winner, the Jackson Academy Raiders, in the most suspenseful game of the season; and WHEREAS, Jackson Prep's storied history with their opponent lit a fire under the team, as they were narrowly defeated in last year's MAIS Class 6A State Championship after the Raiders managed to steal possession and score the winning shot with only 27 seconds left to play; and WHEREAS, never wavering in their determination and mental stamina, the Patriots relied on their swift feet, strategic maneuvering, and athletic prowess to outlast and outplay the Raiders, successfully clinching the championship title in an impressive 53-51 victory; and WHEREAS, several players on the Jackson Prep squad performed exceptionally well in the championship, with senior guard Ben Segrest leading the team with 19 points and John Ed Maddux adding another 14 points and 12 rebounds, recording a double-double for the Patriots; and WHEREAS, the Patriots' ascent to the pinnacle of basketball excellence has been made manifest through the tenacious efforts of the team's athletes: Ejay Napier, EJ Vaughn, Miles Burkhalter, William Thornton, De'Marion Tyler, Asher Reynolds, Cray Luckett, Thomas Coco, Joseph Chaney, Kevin Roberts, Cole Allen, John Ed Maddux, and Ben Segrest; and WHEREAS, the team has been superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach Zach Allison and Assistant Coaches Josh Glidewell and Will Johnson, who have broadened the players' knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution, leading the Patriots to their 17th overall championship title; and WHEREAS, the members of this distinguished team will surely treasure the memories they have made throughout their incredible 28-6 season, constantly flooded with the feeling of greatness that accompanies being a champion as they look with pride upon their banner hanging in the Jackson Prep gym; and WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellence, especially that displayed by the Jackson Prep Patriots Basketball Team, and it is with great pride that we congratulate this elite group of student-athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community, and the State of Mississippi: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the 2024-2025 Jackson Prep Patriots Basketball Team upon winning the Midsouth Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) Overall State Championship, and extend best wishes to the team for continued success in all their future endeavors.
