1-MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE 2025 Regular Session To: Rules By: Representatives Aguirre, Boyd (19th), Thompson, Turner House Resolution 131 (As Adopted by House) A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE TUPELO HIGH SCHOOL GOLDEN WAVE GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM ON WINNING BACK-TO-BACK MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION (MHSAA) CLASS 7A STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS AND COACH TENEESHIA BOYD ON BEING NAMED THE 2024 MISSISSIPPI GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY COACH OF THE YEAR. WHEREAS, the 2024 Tupelo High School Golden Wave Girls Cross Country Team incredibly repeated history on November 2, 2024, when they once again finished their season in outstanding fashion by capturing the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 7A State Championship for the second year in a row; and WHEREAS, these dedicated young women outlasted and outran their competitors as they raced along the Robert and Rebecca Watson Cross Country Course at Choctaw Trails in Clinton, Mississippi, relying on their swift feet and fierce spirit to propel them past the finish line to ultimate victory; and WHEREAS, with fervent determination and dauntless fortitude powering every pace, the team finished with an impressive total score of 81 and a total time of 1:44:32.74, culminating in the second consecutive state championship following a ten-year drought for the Golden Wave program before the state title was recaptured in 2023; and WHEREAS, anchored by standout individual performances, including senior Brookelyn Morgan's placing second, the Lady Wave performed exceptionally well, with three runners placing in the top 14, a truly remarkable accomplishment considering 115 of the state's best runners participated in the race; and WHEREAS, throughout the season, these dedicated student-athletes pushed through long hours of hard work and intense training to improve their speed and build endurance, giving them the tools they needed to go the distance; and WHEREAS, the back-to-back state champions have been superbly coached and inspired by nine-year Head Coach Teneeshia Boyd, who also serves as Head Track and Field Coach at Tupelo High, and Assistant Coach Kelli Dufford, who have broadened the runners' knowledge of the sport, refined their skills, and encouraged them to persevere in giving their all to defend their 2023 title; and WHEREAS, while the team savors its status as reigning champs, the success of the girls cross country program has been made all the sweeter with the naming of Coach Boyd, a former eight-time All-American, 2001 SEC Champion in the 100-meter hurdles, and 2019 SEC Legend, as the 2024 Mississippi Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association; and WHEREAS, in their tireless dedication, the members of the Lady Wave cross country team have developed a winning, cooperative spirit and a high degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitudes, both on the course and off, reflect great credit upon the individual runners and their coaches; and WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellence, especially that displayed by the Tupelo High School Golden Wave Girls Cross Country Team and Mississippi Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year Teneeshia Boyd, and it is with great pride that we congratulate this elite group of student-athletes and Coach Boyd, who have brought honor to their school, families, community and the entire Magnolia State: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the 2024 Tupelo High School Golden Wave Girls Cross Country Team for winning back-to-back Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 7A State Championships and Coach Teneeshia Boyd on being named the 2024 Mississippi Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
