                            MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE 2025 Regular Session To: Rules By: Representative Cockerham House Resolution 97 A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE ILLUSTRIOUS LADIES OF ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INCORPORATED, ON THE AUSPICIOUS OCCASION OF ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA DAY AT THE CAPITOL.      WHEREAS, the distinguished ladies of the Mississippi chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, will travel from around the state to our illustrious Capitol building on March 20, 2025, to strengthen their bonds to the community as a whole by effectuating the sorority's mission to serve and improve the quality of life for all; and      WHEREAS, the oldest Greek letter organization in the United States, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was founded by college educated African-American women on January 15, 1908, on the campus of Howard University and has expanded its footprint globally to 10 regions around the world; and      WHEREAS, since its creation, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., has positively impacted the lives of African Americans and their communities through public policies that implement programs of service that transform, magnify, and accelerate communities and campuses throughout the world; and       WHEREAS, International President Danette Anthony Reed currently leads this illustrious organization nationwide; and        WHEREAS, the South Eastern Region of this esteemed organization is proudly led by Dr. Tracey Morant Adams, Senior Executive Vice President and the Chief Community Development & Corporate Social Responsibility Officer for Renasant Bank, and includes the states of Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama, with membership of 116 chapters, 48 undergraduate chapters and 68 graduate chapters; and      WHEREAS, the sorority's social action efforts in Mississippi are led by Leah J. Holder Wiggins, the South Eastern Representative to the International Connection, Attorney Demetrice Williams Wells, the Mississippi Connection and Social Action Coordinator and the Mississippi Connection and Social Action Committee; and      WHEREAS, Mississippi boasts 36 graduate and undergraduate chapters that work hard under the thematic thrust to Empower Our Families, Build Our Economic Wealth, Enhance Our Environment, Advocate for Justice, and Uplift Our Local Community; and      WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, has a 116-year tradition of saving lives and transforming communities as advocates who seek to reduce suicide amongst youth and reduce the preventable deaths of mothers during pregnancy and child birth; and      WHEREAS, the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha who reside in the State of Mississippi have made significant contributions to local, state, and national programs that have made a positive impact on the State of Mississippi, and their dedication, hard work, and commitment to providing service to the citizens of Mississippi is evident by the countless hours of community service, millions of dollars in financial contributions, and advocacy that has been displayed since the chartering of the first chapter in Mississippi in 1934; and       NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the illustrious ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, on the occasion of Alpha Kappa Alpha Day At The Capitol and wish them continued years of success.      BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the state, regional and national leadership of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
