1-MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE 2025 Regular Session To: Rules By: Senator(s) Simmons (13th), Simmons (12th), Blackmon Senate Concurrent Resolution 534 (As Adopted by Senate and House) A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE OUTSTANDING TRACK AND FIELD COMPETITION CAREER OF GENTRY HIGH SCHOOL AND FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY ALL-AMERICAN JANET DAVIS. WHEREAS, we join the Mississippi track and field competition community and the citizens of Indianola, Mississippi, in recognizing the sporting championships and accomplishments of Janet Davis; and WHEREAS, Janet Davis won her first medal for track and field when she was eight years old at Carver Elementary School. She acquired her speed by racing with her 16 brothers and sisters. She joined her local track team, the "Indianola Track Club," started by her Physical Education Teacher Mr. Lott. In 1977, at age 12, she won her first Gold Medal in Tokyo, Japan. At her young age, she was racing all over the country competing in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track, and her victories in competition brought recognition to the USA and her small hometown. However, Janet nor her team received the attention they deserved; and WHEREAS, this is a record of Janet Davis' track and field accomplishments: Indianola Track Club Records: Eight-year-old AAU Cross Country Champion in the mile; Nine-year-old AAU Cross Country Champion in the mile; 1981, 15-16 age group 100 Meter National Champion in Los Angelos, California; Member of Gentry High School State Championship Team; Triple Crown Winner of Mississippi State Championship, winning the 100-, 200-, and 440-yard dash; Youngest member of the 1981 National Sports Festival South Team in Syracuse, New York. Finished third in the 100 meters behind two former Olympians, Evelyn Ashford and Jeannette Boldin. Also, finished third in the 200 meters behind Florence Griffith Joyner (FloJo) and Jeannette Boldin; Member of Gentry High School Mississippi State Championship Team anchoring the 4x100, 4x200, and 4x400 relay; and 1982-1983 Records: Swept the most coveted award at Gentry High School as a Junior, "Athlete of the Year"; Overall State Record Holder in 100- and 220-yard dash; Triple Crown Winner in State Championship, winning the 100, 200, and 400 meters; Winner of the 1982 National High School Track All-American Award; Ranked #1 in the Nation by Track & Field News magazine in the 100 and 200 meters; USA National Champion in 100-meter dash in Kansas; Member of Gentry High School State Championship Team anchoring the 4x100, 4x200, and 4x400 meters relay; Made USA Junior National Team in Caracas, Venezuela. She belongs to the university's Top 25 Club in the 100, 200 and 400 with times of 11.5, 23.13 and 52.77 in each respective event; and WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we offer this past-due recognition to an award-winning Mississippi athlete who has brought honor to her family, her hometown, her university and to the State of Mississippi: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize the outstanding track and field competition career of Gentry High School and Florida State University All-American Janet Davis, and extend to Janet and her family our thanks and best wishes for future success.
