1-MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE 2025 Regular Session To: Rules By: Senator(s) Simmons (12th), Norwood, Frazier, Horhn, Blount, Barnett, Michel, Thomas Senate Resolution 64 (As Adopted by Senate) A RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING JSU TENURED PROFESSOR DR. BYRON D'ANDRA OREY UPON HIS ELECTION AS PRESIDENT OF THE SOUTHERN POLITICAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION (SPSA). WHEREAS, we join the administration and faculty of Jackson State University in congratulating tenured Political Science Professor Dr. Byron D'Andra Orey on his election as President of the Southern Political Science Association (SPSA), one of the country's largest political science organizations; and WHEREAS, the Southern Political Science Association is one of the oldest and largest political science organizations in the United States. Founded in 1929, its primary purposes were to publish a professional journal, to improve teaching, to promote interest and research in theoretical and practical political problems, to encourage communication and to develop standards of competence and respect between persons engaged in the professional study and practice of government and politics; and WHEREAS, to support the above goals, the association sponsors an annual conference and owns the Journal of Politics. The SPSA holds its Annual Conference in January. It is one of the largest political science conferences in the United States presenting research in all major fields and subfields of political science; and WHEREAS, the Journal of Politics, a leading general interest journal in political science, publishes theoretically innovative and methodologically diverse research in all subfields of the discipline including, but not limited to, American politics, comparative politics, formal theory, international relations, methodology, political theory, public administration and public policy. The conceptions of theory and method are both broad and encompassing, and welcome contributions from scholars around the world; and WHEREAS, past Presidents of this prestigious organization include the leading lecturers and authors of political science theory and research in the country; and WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize a highly regarded Mississippi professor who has brought honor to his university, the JSU faculty community and to the State of Mississippi: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby congratulate JSU tenured Professor Dr. Byron D'Andra Orey upon his election as President of the Southern Political Science Association (SPSA), and extend to Dr. Orey and his family our best wishes for continued success. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Dr. Orey, forwarded to the President of JSU and the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
