1-MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE 2025 Regular Session To: Rules By: Senator(s) Boyd Senate Resolution 69 (As Adopted by Senate) A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING SHELBY MCEWEN FROM ABBEVILLE, MISSISSIPPI, FOR HIS OUTSTANDING TRACK-AND-FIELD CAREER AND FOR TYING FOR THE GOLD MEDAL IN AN EPIC HIGH JUMP FINAL IN THE 2024 SUMMER OLYMPICS. WHEREAS, during the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Shelby McEwen, a native of Abbeville, Mississippi, jumped a 2.36 meter high jump and was tied for the lead with New Zealand's Hamish Kerr. Both men were offered the option to share the gold medal. Kerr wanted to proceed to a jump-off, and McEwen agreed. McEwen lost to Kerr and won the silver medal in the epic high jump final; and WHEREAS, from 2015 to 2017, Shelby McEwen attended Northwest Mississippi Community College. He was a member of the basketball team and competed unattached in track and field. He then started competing for the Alabama Crimson Tide, and participated in the indoor and outdoor track seasons in 2018 and 2019; and WHEREAS, in 2019, he jumped a 2.31 meter high jump indoor and then a 2.30 meter high jump outdoor, as second at 2019 USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in Doha, Qatar, where he was the first nonqualifier for the final; and WHEREAS, on May 22, 2021, he jumped a 2.33 meter high jump at Roy P. Drachman Stadium in Tucson, Arizona, the qualifying standard for the 2020 Olympic Summer Games, before finishing third with a 2.30 meter high jump at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials. He finished twelfth at the 2020 Summer Olympics with a jump of 2.27 meters; and WHEREAS, Shelby claimed the silver medal in the famous 2024 Summer Olympic final and represented the United States in the World Indoor Championship in Glasgow, Scotland. It is with great pride that we recognize this track and field star who has brought honor to his family, his community and to the State of Mississippi: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Shelby McEwen from Abbeville, Mississippi, for his outstanding track and field career and for tying for the gold medal in an epic high jump final in the 2024 Summer Olympics and extend to Shelby and his family our best wishes for future success.
