We say every day 'chasing history,' and today we made history"; and WHEREAS, the Lady Chargers (30-3) defeated West Jones (28-5) by a score of 51-46 to win the Class 6A Title on March 1, 2025, at the Mississippi Coliseum. The win was Jackson Public Schools' first basketball title since the Lanier boys won in 2021; and WHEREAS, "It feels amazing," Jahanna Wilson said, who led Callaway with 21 points. "You know, it's a long-time coming. We came here two years ago and we fell short, but today we came here with one goal, and that one goal was to win, and we did it"; and WHEREAS, "When your senior led, it is really nothing for me to do, but just to say all, they got it, let him handle it," Coach Sutton said. "I was out of timeouts, but not one time did I worry, not one time did I trek because I had my senior guards on the floor, I knew they would take care of it for me"; and WHEREAS, now, Jahanna Wilson can have the pleasure of seeing a girls banner when she steps into Callaway's gym. The only basketball banners in the gym have been the Callaway boys championships; and WHEREAS, the 2025 Callaway High School Lady Chargers Girls Basketball Team Roster: Alisiah Cook, Keriyanna Murriel, Noel Bryant, Jernae Ringgold, Trinity Cook, Jahanna Wilson, Jackayla Turnage, Megann Wallace, Shelbie Walker, De'Jah Granderson, Layla Ba, Ashley Dunson, Tanija Stokes, Hailyn Henderson, Kai Keyes and Kiyoni Turner; and Coaches Ashil Sutton and Deyano Martin; and WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize these student athletes who have brought honor to their team, their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Callaway High School Lady Chargers Girls Basketball Team and Coaches Ashil Sutton and Deyano Martin for winning their first 2025 MHSAA Class 6A Girls Basketball Championship, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future championships.
