1414 AN ACT TO REQUIRE THE REPORTING OF A LOST OR STOLEN FIREARM. 2
1515 The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts: 3
1616 SECTION 1. Article 53A of Chapter 14 of the General Statutes is amended by 4
1717 adding a new section to read: 5
1818 "ยง 14-409.13. Report of loss or theft of firearm. 6
1919 (a) Any owner of a firearm as defined in G.S. 14-408.1(a) shall report the loss or theft of 7
2020 the firearm within 24 hours after the discovery of the loss or theft to either (i) the local law 8
2121 enforcement agency having jurisdiction over the location where the loss or theft of the firearm 9
2222 occurred or (ii) the State Bureau of Investigation. The report required by this subsection shall 10
2323 include, to the extent known, all of the following: 11
2424 (1) The firearm's caliber, make, model, manufacturer, and serial number. 12
2525 (2) Any other distinguishing number or identification mark on the firearm. 13
2626 (3) The circumstances of the loss or theft, including the date, place, and manner. 14
2727 (b) If a local law enforcement agency or the State Bureau of Investigation receives a 15
2828 report pursuant to subsection (a) of this section, the agency or Bureau shall enter the information 16
2929 set forth in subdivisions (1) and (2) of subsection (a) of this section, to the extent known, into the 17
3030 National Crime Information Center database. 18
3131 (c) A violation of this section is a Class 3 misdemeanor; however, a second or subsequent 19
3232 violation of this section is a Class I felony." 20
3333 SECTION 2. This act becomes effective December 1, 2025, and applies to offenses 21
3434 committed on or after that date. 22
