1414 AN ACT TO DIRECT THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION TO CONDUCT A 2
1515 STUDY ON THE FEASIBILITY OF MAINTAINING ONE YEAR -ROUND SCHOOL 3
1616 PER LOCAL SCHOOL ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT . 4
1717 The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts: 5
1818 SECTION 1. The Department of Public Instruction shall conduct a study to 6
1919 determine the feasibility of requiring each local school administrative unit to maintain at least 7
2020 one school that operates on a year-round school calendar for each grade level, kindergarten 8
2121 through grade 12. All grade levels do not need to be offered year-round at the same school. At a 9
2222 minimum, the Department shall study: 10
2323 (1) Administrative costs associated with establishing and maintaining a school 11
2424 that operates on a year-round calendar. 12
2525 (2) Operational costs associated with establishing and maintaining a school that 13
2626 operates on a year-round calendar. 14
2727 (3) Transportation and other logistical challenges to having students from across 15
2828 a local school administrative unit attend the year-round school if they choose. 16
2929 (4) Barriers to establishing a year-round school. 17
3030 (5) Anticipated enrollment if year-round schools were more accessible. 18
3131 SECTION 2. The Department of Public Instruction is authorized to work with a 19
3232 third-party organization to complete this study. 20
3333 SECTION 3. The Department of Public Instruction shall report the results of the 21
3434 study, along with any legislative or budgetary recommendations, to the Joint Legislative 22
3535 Education Oversight Committee no later than January 15, 2027. 23
3636 SECTION 4. This act is effective when it becomes law. 24
