17 | 17 | | The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts: 5 |

18 | 18 | | SECTION 1. The Department of Public Instruction shall conduct a study to 6 |

19 | 19 | | determine the feasibility of requiring each local school administrative unit to maintain at least 7 |
---|
20 | 20 | | one school that operates on a year-round school calendar for each grade level, kindergarten 8 |
---|
21 | 21 | | through grade 12. All grade levels do not need to be offered year-round at the same school. At a 9 |
---|
22 | 22 | | minimum, the Department shall study: 10 |
---|
23 | 23 | | (1) Administrative costs associated with establishing and maintaining a school 11 |
---|
24 | 24 | | that operates on a year-round calendar. 12 |
---|
25 | 25 | | (2) Operational costs associated with establishing and maintaining a school that 13 |
---|
26 | 26 | | operates on a year-round calendar. 14 |
---|
27 | 27 | | (3) Transportation and other logistical challenges to having students from across 15 |
---|
28 | 28 | | a local school administrative unit attend the year-round school if they choose. 16 |
---|
29 | 29 | | (4) Barriers to establishing a year-round school. 17 |
---|
30 | 30 | | (5) Anticipated enrollment if year-round schools were more accessible. 18 |
---|
31 | 31 | | SECTION 2. The Department of Public Instruction is authorized to work with a 19 |
---|
32 | 32 | | third-party organization to complete this study. 20 |
---|
33 | 33 | | SECTION 3. The Department of Public Instruction shall report the results of the 21 |
---|
34 | 34 | | study, along with any legislative or budgetary recommendations, to the Joint Legislative 22 |
---|
35 | 35 | | Education Oversight Committee no later than January 15, 2027. 23 |
---|
36 | 36 | | SECTION 4. This act is effective when it becomes law. 24 |
