| 17 | 17 | | The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts: 5 |

| 18 | 18 | | SECTION 1. G.S. 115C-270.20(a) is amended by adding a new subdivision to read: 6 |

| 19 | 19 | | "(7) Montessori license. – A license that allows the holder of the license to teach 7 |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | only in a school that uses Montessori instruction as its primary method of 8 |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | instruction. An individual holding a license pursuant to this subdivision may 9 |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | not teach students in a public school that is not a Montessori school unless the 10 |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | individual holds another license issued by the State for public school teachers. 11 |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | To receive this license, an individual shall meet the following criteria: 12 |

| 25 | 25 | | a. Hold a valid credential from any of the following groups: 13 |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | 1. The American Montessori Society. 14 |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | 2. The Association Montessori Internationale. 15 |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | 3. A program accredited by the Montessori Accreditation Council 16 |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | for Teacher Education. 17 |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | b. Hold a bachelor's degree in any field. 18 |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | c. Complete any examination requirements adopted by the State Board." 19 |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | SECTION 2. This act is effective when it becomes law and applies to applicants for 20 |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Montessori licenses on or after that date. 21 |
