CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT As amended by the Senate on March 24, 2025. An Act concerning the public school curriculum and supplementing chapter 35 of Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes. Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey: 1. a. 1The State Board of Education shall adopt New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Social Studies pertaining to the history of labor and labor movements in the United States and New Jersey. b.1 A board of education shall include instruction on United States and New Jersey labor history and the contributions of the labor movement in an appropriate place in the curriculum of students in grades six through 12 as part of the school district's implementation of the New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Social Studies. The instruction shall include, at a minimum, information on: (1) the history of organized labor; (2) notable strikes throughout history; (3) unionization drives; and (4) the collective bargaining process and existing legal protections in the workplace. 1[b. The Commissioner of Education shall provide school districts with age-appropriate sample learning activities and resources designed to implement the requirement established pursuant to subsection a. of this section] c. A board of education shall establish policies and procedures pertaining to the selection of instructional materials to implement the requirements of subsection b. of this section. When adopting instructional materials for use in the schools of the district, a board of education shall adopt inclusive materials that portray the political, economic, and societal contributions of individuals involved in the labor movement throughout the history of the United States and New Jersey1. 2. This act shall take effect immediately 1[and shall first apply to the first full school year following the date of enactment] . The standards adopted by the State Board of Education pursuant to subsection a. of section 1 of this act shall occur concurrent with each update to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards required pursuant to section 4 of P.L.2007, c.260 (C.18A:7F-46)1.
