(cf: P.L.2007, c.244, s.4) 2. This act shall take effect immediately. STATEMENT This bill classifies tianeptine as a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance. According to the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, tianeptine, commonly referred to as "gas station heroin," has seen a rapid and marked increase in the United States illicit drug market. Tianeptine is often abused for its euphoric properties similar to other opioids, such as heroin. Severe adverse health effects, including respiratory depression, severe sedation, and death, have occurred from the misuse of tianeptine.
