4343 WHEREAS, certified water and wastewater operators provide
4444 essential services in the state by helping maintain safe and
4545 reliable sources of drinking water and treating wastewater for
4646 release back into the environment; and
4747 WHEREAS, drinking water contains many substances that can
4848 be harmful to human health if not treated properly, including
4949 germs, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, lead and arsenic;

7878 WHEREAS, the treatment of wastewater is important in
7979 maintaining the health of rivers, lakes and other bodies of
8080 water, protecting aquatic life and for reuse for agriculture;

8282 WHEREAS, clean water is critical for a community's
8383 recreational activities and economic development; and
8484 WHEREAS, certified water and wastewater operators conduct
8585 operations and provide services that are essential to the
8686 continued operation of critical infrastructure;
8787 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
8888 STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the legislature support legislation to
8989 elevate certified water and wastewater operators to essential
9090 workers and fund a study to add certified water and wastewater
9191 operators to state health insurance and retirement benefit
9292 programs; and
9393 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
9494 transmitted to the members of the legislature.
