37	37	RECOGNIZING THE CENTENNIAL OF ROUTE 66 AND ITS LEGACY IN NEW
38	38	MEXICO.
39	39	WHEREAS, United States highway 66, better known as route
40	40	66, was a product of a grassroots movement for better roads and
41	41	was one of the original highways and a main artery of the
42	42	United States numbered highway system when it was established
43	43	in 1926; and
44	44	WHEREAS, route 66 was known as "the great diagonal
45	45	highway" that began in Chicago; sliced through the midwest;
46	46	rolled across the great plains; straddled the deserts and
47	47	mountainscapes of the great Southwest, including the beautiful
48	48	Santa Rosa area; and ended at the edge of the Pacific ocean in
49	49	Santa Monica, California; and
50	50	WHEREAS, route 66 became a symbol for the American

80	80	WHEREAS, Santa Rosa came of age during this transportation
81	81	era, first through the connection of the Chicago, Rock Island
82	82	and Pacific railroad and the El Paso northern railway on
83	83	December 26, 1901, and then twenty-five years later when route
84	84	66 was defined through existing roadways in Santa Rosa and New
85	85	Mexico; and
86	86	WHEREAS, route 66 in Santa Rosa went straight through the
87	87	downtown's main street, then turned east at what is now Lake
88	88	drive and Fourth street, eventually passing Blue Hole, Santa
89	89	Rosa's natural spring water swimming and diving paradise; and
90	90	WHEREAS, in 1937, a redesign of route 66 established the
91	91	route as it is today, and many restaurants, bars, motels and
92	92	gas stations were built along the way to serve the traveling
93	93	public; and
94	94	WHEREAS, many Santa Rosa residents recall an upbringing
95	95	with parents, grandparents and great-grandparents that raised
96	96	families with ties to route 66-related businesses and legacies;
97	97	and
98	98	WHEREAS, in 1972, interstate 40 was completed and took
99	99	route 66's place as a legacy to automobile travel; and
100	100	WHEREAS, in 2026, Santa Rosa will join the nation in
101	101	celebrating the centennial and legacy of route 66, known as
102	102	"the mother road", as a national treasure; and

131	131	WHEREAS, many celebrations are planned in Santa Rosa,
132	132	including a new lighted sign across the bridge at the middle
133	133	interchange, a musical road on the west side of town and
134	134	tourist-friendly projects such as a new website and events
135	135	calendar;
136	136	NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE
137	137	OF NEW MEXICO that recognition be extended to the centennial of
138	138	route 66 in Santa Rosa and throughout New Mexico; and
139	139	BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be
140	140	transmitted to the governor.
