38	38	DECLARING FEBRUARY 18, 2025 "ALS AWARENESS DAY" IN THE SENATE.
39	39	WHEREAS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS, is also known
40	40	as Lou Gehrig's disease; and
41	41	WHEREAS, ALS has no known cause, no means of prevention
42	42	and no cure; and
43	43	WHEREAS, ALS does not affect a patient's mental capacity,
44	44	so the patient remains alert and aware of the patient's loss of
45	45	motor functions and of the inevitable outcome of continued
46	46	deterioration and death; and
47	47	WHEREAS, ALS is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that is
48	48	characterized by degeneration of the cell bodies of the lower
49	49	motor neurons in the gray matter of the anterior horns of the
50	50	spinal cord; and
51	51	WHEREAS, ALS eventually causes muscles to atrophy, and the

80	80	WHEREAS, research indicates that military veterans have a
81	81	fifty percent greater risk of developing ALS than those who
82	82	have not served in the military; and
83	83	WHEREAS, an estimated one hundred fifty New Mexicans are
84	84	living with ALS at any given time; and
85	85	WHEREAS, in 2010, soon after his twenty-eighth birthday,
86	86	former university of New Mexico lobo and Albuquerque high
87	87	school soccer star Patrick Grange was diagnosed with ALS,
88	88	making him the youngest ALS patient in New Mexico; and
89	89	WHEREAS, despite fighting this terrible disease as hard as
90	90	he could, Pat died of ALS on April 10, 2012, which led to
91	91	several "Patrick Grange ALS Awareness Days" designated at the
92	92	state capitol; and
93	93	WHEREAS, the Grange family has supported numerous New
94	94	Mexico families affected by ALS over the past decade in
95	95	collaboration with ALS New Mexico by providing guidance and
96	96	direction when caring for a someone with ALS; and
97	97	WHEREAS, ALS New Mexico is a local nonprofit organization
98	98	that supports, on average, one hundred thirty people living
99	99	with ALS and their loved ones; and
100	100	WHEREAS, ALS New Mexico leaves no stone unturned by
101	101	navigating financial hardships through respite grants, access
102	102	to life-changing clinical care at the university of New Mexico
103	103	hospital and providing adaptive equipment free of charge; and

132	132	WHEREAS, ALS New Mexico helps many families affected by
133	133	ALS through funding and providing direct services and capacity
134	134	support with average annual engagements of approximately one
135	135	thousand five hundred resource referrals and equipment loans,
136	136	as well as bringing awareness of ALS through educational
137	137	opportunities to New Mexico residents; and
138	138	WHEREAS, "ALS Awareness Day" will increase public
139	139	awareness of ALS patients' circumstances, acknowledge the
140	140	terrible impact the disease has, not only on the patient but
141	141	also on the patient's family and community, and recognize the
142	142	services being provided to families affected by ALS and the
143	143	research being done to eradicate this horrible disease; and
144	144	WHEREAS, we as a community join in collective support to
145	145	combat ALS and improve the quality of life for patients,
146	146	families and New Mexicans affected by ALS;
147	147	NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE
148	148	OF NEW MEXICO that February 18, 2025 be declared "ALS Awareness
149	149	Day" in the senate; and
150	150	BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
151	151	transmitted to the chair of the interim legislative health and
152	152	human services committee and ALS New Mexico.
