3838 DECLARING FEBRUARY 18, 2025 "ALS AWARENESS DAY" IN THE SENATE.
3939 WHEREAS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS, is also known
4040 as Lou Gehrig's disease; and
4141 WHEREAS, ALS has no known cause, no means of prevention
4242 and no cure; and
4343 WHEREAS, ALS does not affect a patient's mental capacity,
4444 so the patient remains alert and aware of the patient's loss of
4545 motor functions and of the inevitable outcome of continued
4646 deterioration and death; and
4747 WHEREAS, ALS is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that is
4848 characterized by degeneration of the cell bodies of the lower
4949 motor neurons in the gray matter of the anterior horns of the
5050 spinal cord; and
5151 WHEREAS, ALS eventually causes muscles to atrophy, and the

8080 WHEREAS, research indicates that military veterans have a
8181 fifty percent greater risk of developing ALS than those who
8282 have not served in the military; and
8383 WHEREAS, an estimated one hundred fifty New Mexicans are
8484 living with ALS at any given time; and
8585 WHEREAS, in 2010, soon after his twenty-eighth birthday,
8686 former university of New Mexico lobo and Albuquerque high
8787 school soccer star Patrick Grange was diagnosed with ALS,
8888 making him the youngest ALS patient in New Mexico; and
8989 WHEREAS, despite fighting this terrible disease as hard as
9090 he could, Pat died of ALS on April 10, 2012, which led to
9191 several "Patrick Grange ALS Awareness Days" designated at the
9292 state capitol; and
9393 WHEREAS, the Grange family has supported numerous New
9494 Mexico families affected by ALS over the past decade in
9595 collaboration with ALS New Mexico by providing guidance and
9696 direction when caring for a someone with ALS; and
9797 WHEREAS, ALS New Mexico is a local nonprofit organization
9898 that supports, on average, one hundred thirty people living
9999 with ALS and their loved ones; and
100100 WHEREAS, ALS New Mexico leaves no stone unturned by
101101 navigating financial hardships through respite grants, access
102102 to life-changing clinical care at the university of New Mexico
103103 hospital and providing adaptive equipment free of charge; and

132132 WHEREAS, ALS New Mexico helps many families affected by
133133 ALS through funding and providing direct services and capacity
134134 support with average annual engagements of approximately one
135135 thousand five hundred resource referrals and equipment loans,
136136 as well as bringing awareness of ALS through educational
137137 opportunities to New Mexico residents; and
138138 WHEREAS, "ALS Awareness Day" will increase public
139139 awareness of ALS patients' circumstances, acknowledge the
140140 terrible impact the disease has, not only on the patient but
141141 also on the patient's family and community, and recognize the
142142 services being provided to families affected by ALS and the
143143 research being done to eradicate this horrible disease; and
144144 WHEREAS, we as a community join in collective support to
145145 combat ALS and improve the quality of life for patients,
146146 families and New Mexicans affected by ALS;
147147 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE
148148 OF NEW MEXICO that February 18, 2025 be declared "ALS Awareness
149149 Day" in the senate; and
150150 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
151151 transmitted to the chair of the interim legislative health and
152152 human services committee and ALS New Mexico.
