3333 DECLARING FEBRUARY 11, 2025 "LOWRIDER DAY" IN THE SENATE AND
3434 REQUESTING THAT THE LEGISLATURE CONSIDER LEGISLATION ADOPTING
3535 THE LOWRIDER AS THE NEW MEXICO OFFICIAL STATE CAR.
3636 WHEREAS, lowriding is deeply ingrained in the culture of
3737 the American southwest and woven into the cultural fabric and
3838 heritage of New Mexico; and
3939 WHEREAS, lowriding serves as a catalyst for embracing and
4040 valuing the cultural diversity and history of New Mexico; and
4141 WHEREAS, lowriders deserve recognition as a unique mode of
4242 transportation as well as beautiful works of art and self-
4343 expression; and
4444 WHEREAS, lowriders are recognized as part of Hispanic and
4545 Chicano cultural traditions and cultural heirlooms of long
4646 lines of Hispanic and Chicano families; and

7474 WHEREAS, communities located along historic United States
7575 route 66, including the cities of Albuquerque, Espanola and
7676 Santa Fe, have a rich lowrider history, and the city of
7777 Espanola is nationally recognized as the lowrider capital of
7878 the world; and
7979 WHEREAS, lowriders have served the city of Albuquerque as
8080 a bridge between the local lowrider community and youth, law
8181 enforcement and the community at large; and
8282 WHEREAS, the lowrider is a symbol of and sets an example
8383 for slow, safe and responsible driving; and
8484 WHEREAS, the lowrider can serve New Mexico as a literal
8585 and figurative vehicle for positive change; and
8686 WHEREAS, the cities of Albuquerque and Espanola have
8787 passed legislative measures to embrace lowrider culture and
8888 activate economic development opportunities that would have
8989 otherwise not been fully realized; and
9090 WHEREAS, New Mexico has also embraced lowrider culture for
9191 its contribution to the state's tourism industry; and
9292 WHEREAS, New Mexico does not have an official car; and
9393 WHEREAS, the Albuquerque city council passed a legislative
9494 measure urging that the state legislature consider the
9595 designation of the lowrider as New Mexico's official state car;
9696 and
9797 WHEREAS, legislation has been introduced that would
9898 designate the lowrider as New Mexico's official state car;

127127 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE
128128 OF NEW MEXICO that February 11, 2025 be declared "Lowrider Day"
129129 in the senate in recognition of the lowrider's cultural
130130 significance and importance to New Mexico culture and
131131 tradition; and
132132 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that legislation be considered for
133133 the designation of the lowrider as New Mexico's official state
134134 car; and
135135 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
136136 transmitted to the governor, the secretary of tourism and the
137137 members of the Albuquerque, Espanola and Santa Fe city
138138 councils.
