22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Ben Graham was born in 1942 in Corvallis, Oregon |

23 | 23 | | and thrived growing up on his family’s farm and playing the piano; |

25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, After a brief sojourn in Washington, D.C. for college |

26 | 26 | | and work, Ben returned to Oregon to pursue his true passion in legal |

27 | 27 | | studies, graduating with a doctorate of jurisprudence cum laude |

28 | 28 | | from Willamette University College of Law; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Ben practiced law for 8 years in Oregon and also |
---|
30 | 30 | | served as the president of the Board of Mentally Handicapped |
---|
31 | 31 | | Adults, before moving to Las Vegas in 1977 to become a prosecutor |
---|
32 | 32 | | for the Clark County District Attorney’s Office; and |

33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Ben continued on to serve as a Chief Deputy District |

34 | 34 | | Attorney in the Criminal Division and also played an influential role |

35 | 35 | | in the evolution of Nevada’s current criminal law as the lobbyist for |

36 | 36 | | the Nevada District Attorneys Association; and |

37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Ben worked tirelessly for over 30 years to improve |

38 | 38 | | the judicial system in this State, including teaching criminal justice |
---|
39 | 39 | | courses for 29 years at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and the |
---|
40 | 40 | | College of Southern Nevada; and |
---|
41 | 41 | | WHEREAS, After retirement from his illustrious career with |

42 | 42 | | Clark County, Ben continued his contributions to the legal |
---|
43 | 43 | | community as an attorney for the Nevada Supreme Court for 14 |

44 | 44 | | years, by which time he had perfected his famous chocolate chip |

45 | 45 | | cookies that he and Elana, his loving wife of 43 years, often baked |

53 | 53 | | accomplishments, one of his proudest achievements was co- |

54 | 54 | | founding the Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers program of the State |

55 | 55 | | Bar of Nevada, which assists lawyers with addiction issues; and |
---|
56 | 56 | | WHEREAS, On a personal level, Ben is remembered by his wife, |
---|
57 | 57 | | his children and their spouses, his niece and nephew, as well as his |
---|
58 | 58 | | grandchildren, as a man of strong faith and a constant source of |
---|
59 | 59 | | support and unconditional love; and |
---|
60 | 60 | | WHEREAS, Although Ben faced many challenges and difficulties |
---|
61 | 61 | | during his lifetime, including the tragic passing of his daughter |
---|
62 | 62 | | Caroline in 2012, he used the hardships he endured as inspiration for |
---|
63 | 63 | | a life of service, which ultimately left an enduring impact on |
---|
64 | 64 | | Nevadans from all walks of life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
65 | 65 | | RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, THE |

66 | 66 | | ASSEMBLY CONCURRING, That Ben Graham’s legacy and |
---|
67 | 67 | | immeasurable contributions to the legal community of this State be |
---|
68 | 68 | | commended and remembered as having forever changed the course |
---|
69 | 69 | | of life for generations of Nevadans; and be it further |
---|
70 | 70 | | RESOLVED, That Ben Graham’s life, both professionally and |

71 | 71 | | personally, serve as the true embodiment of what it means to live a |
