AN ACT relating to education; authorizing the Board of Regents of the University of Nevada to establish a course of study in financial literacy, for which a student must pass to graduate; and providing other matters properly relating thereto. Legislative Counsel’s Digest: Article 11 of the Nevada Constitution requires the Nevada Legislature to 1 provide for the establishment of a State University that is controlled by a Board of 2 Regents whose duties are prescribed by law. (Nev. Const. Art. 11, § 4) Existing law 3 establishes the Nevada System of Higher Education, which consists of the State 4 University and certain other educational institutions, programs and operations. 5 (NRS 396.020) Existing law authorizes the Board of Regents of the University of 6 Nevada to prescribe the course of study for the System. (NRS 396.440) Existing 7 law grants the Board of Regents the power to prescribe the standards of graduation. 8 (NRS 396.550) This bill authorizes the Board of Regents to establish a course of 9 study in financial literacy, for which a student of the System must pass a 10 satisfactory examination to receive a certificate or diploma of graduation. 11 – 2 – - *AB289* THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Chapter 396 of NRS is hereby amended by adding 1 thereto a new section to read as follows: 2 The Board of Regents may establish a course of study in 3 financial literacy, for which a student of the System must pass a 4 satisfactory examination to receive a certificate or diploma of 5 graduation. 6 H
