 Senate Resolution No. 854 BY: Senator STEC HONORING Kevin Daugherty upon his induction into the Upstate New York Basketball Hall of Fame on April 23, 2023 WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to outstanding athletes who have distinguished themselves through their exceptional performance, attaining unprecedented success and the highest level of personal achievement; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Kevin Daugherty upon his induction into the Upstate New York Basketball Hall of Fame, to be celebrated at its Awards Ceremony on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at the Hilton Hotel in Troy, New York; and WHEREAS, Every year, the Upstate New York Basketball Hall of Fame publicly commends the pursuit of athletic excellence, recognizes those who have excelled, and strives to preserve its rich athletic heritage; Kevin Daugherty is truly deserving of this prestigious award; and WHEREAS, Born and raised in Plattsburgh, New York, Kevin Daugherty began his basketball career as a member of the Plattsburgh High School Varsity Boys Basketball Team under Head Coach Ray Holmes; prior to this, he used to attend practices before he even made the varsity team, as he would shoot silently off to the side while still listening to everything the seasoned coach had to say to his team; and WHEREAS, Kevin Daugherty and his teammates won the Northern Division Championships in the 1973-1974 and 1974-1975 seasons, and years later, they were inducted to the Plattsburgh Athletic Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, After graduating, Kevin Daugherty played basketball for the Clinton Community College Cougars for the 1975-1976 season; he then transferred to Canton Community College where he was a member of the 1977-1978 basketball team, followed by Eisenhower College in Cayuga Lake where he would play Division III basketball for two years, serving as the co-Captain; and WHEREAS, Even though he was studying history, Kevin Daugherty chose to continue his love for basketball and started his coaching career as an assistant for the Eisenhower Women's Basketball Team during the 1980-1981 season; and WHEREAS, After earning his bachelor's degree, Kevin Daugherty became the assistant men's basketball coach at Genesee Community College; he then switched gears, and worked as a corrections officer for the next six years; and WHEREAS, In 1988, Kevin Daugherty took the position of head coach of the Plattsburgh High School Varsity Boys Basketball Team; throughout his tenure, he not only talked the talk, but walked the walk with his players; and WHEREAS, In 1991, Kevin Daugherty led his team to its first sectional title, and throughout the next 17 years, they went on to win nine sectional titles and nine league titles, and boasted a 21-7 sectional record and a 278-107 (.722) all-time record; and WHEREAS, For his steadfast and unremitting commitment to his team and high school basketball as a whole, Kevin Daugherty was the recipient of the 1990-1991 Coach of the Year Award; and WHEREAS, Kevin Daugherty then returned to Clinton Community College in 2005, and took the position of men's basketball team coach; in 2019, he assumed the role of the college's Athletic Director, however, he took some time off to take care of his late wife, Erin; and WHEREAS, In 2021, Kevin Daugherty came back to Clinton Community College and once again held the title of Athletic Director, the position he continues to hold today; and WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Kevin Daugherty graciously gave countless hours of his time and energy to the residents of Upstate New York as a skilled and inspirational tutor, respected for his ability to develop potential into excellence; and WHEREAS, Kevin Daugherty has clearly made a contribution to the spirit of excellence which is a tradition of his Upstate New York community; and WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individuals of such outstanding athletic accomplishments are brought to our attention, they should be recognized by all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to honor Kevin Daugherty upon his induction into the Upstate New York Basketball Hall of Fame; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to Kevin Daugherty.
