 Senate Resolution No. 1056 BY: Senator MARTINS COMMENDING Marvin Makofsky upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition by The League of Women Voters of Port Washington-Manhasset on June 11, 2023 WHEREAS, A great community is only as great as those persons who provide exemplary service, whether through participation in voluntary programs, through unique personal achievement in their profession or other endeavors, or simply through a lifetime of good citizenship; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Marvin Makofsky upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition by The League of Women Voters of Port Washington-Manhasset; his accomplishments will be celebrated at a brunch on Sunday, June 11, 2023, at the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club in Port Washington, New York; and WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, grassroots nonprofit dedicated to empowering everyone to fully participate in this country's democracy; with active Leagues in all 50 states, and more than 750 Leagues across the country, members engage in advocacy, education, litigation, and organizing to protect every American's freedom to vote; and WHEREAS, Marvin Makofsky is the founder of Plant A Row for the Hungry in Port Washington; its mission is to mobilize the Port Washington Community to grow and distribute locally grown produce to food insecure families and impact climate change as it relates to growing food; and WHEREAS, A true asset to its community, the organization also educates children and adults about proper, sustainable gardening techniques and provides opportunities for artists to create and display their talents across the community via large painted pots that house growing vegetables; and WHEREAS, Other initiatives of Plant A Row for the Hungry include a summer adult and student vegetable growing program to fight hunger and climate change, partnerships with the Nicholas Center for Autism, and the Helen Keller National Center Garden for Adults and Students, and much more; and WHEREAS, Since 2010, Plant A Row for the Hungry has delivered over 57,000 pounds of produce for those in need, undoubtedly creating a positive impact on countless members of the Port Washington community; and WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have the opportunity to express its highest admiration for Marvin Makofsky, and to wish him continued success in all his future endeavors; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to commend Marvin Makofsky upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition by The League of Women Voters of Port Washington-Manhasset; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to Marvin Makofsky.
