BROUK, CLEARE, GOUNARDES, MANNION, MYRIE, SEPULVEDA, WEBB -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be commit- ted to the Committee on Higher Education -- committee discharged, bill amended, ordered reprinted as amended and recommitted to said commit- tee AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to requiring student identification cards to contain the new national suicide prevention lifeline number, 9-8-8, and the crisis text line, 741741 The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows: 1 Section 1. Short title. This act shall be known and may be cited as 2 the "student lifeline act". 3 § 2. The education law is amended by adding a new section 207-b to 4 read as follows: 5 § 207-b. Student identification cards. 1. Each institution of higher 6 education authorized by the legislature or by the regents of the univer- 7 sity of the state of New York to confer academic degrees in this state 8 which issues student identification cards to its students shall include 9 on such cards: 10 a. the national suicide prevention lifeline number, 9-8-8; and 11 b. the crisis text line, with instructions "Text GOT5 to 741741". 12 2. Each year, prior to the start of a new school year, each institu- 13 tion of higher education authorized by the legislature or by the regents 14 of the university of the state of New York to confer academic degrees in 15 this state which issues student identification cards to its students 16 shall certify to the regents that such identification cards have the 17 information required under subdivision one of this section. 18 § 3. This act shall take effect July 16, 2024 and shall apply to 19 student identification cards that are issued, modified, altered or 20 amended on or after such date.
