HYNDMAN, SAYEGH -- read once and referred to the Committee on Higher Education -- committee discharged, bill amended, ordered reprinted as amended and recommitted to said committee AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to the New York state masters-in-education teacher incentive scholarship program <B><U>The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-</U></B> <B><U>bly, do enact as follows:</U></B> 1 Section 1. Subdivision 1 of section 669-f of the education law, as 2 added by section 1 of subpart A of part EE of chapter 56 of the laws of 3 2015, is amended and a new subdivision 1-a is added to read as follows: 4 1. Eligibility. Students who are matriculated in an approved master's 5 degree in education program at a New York state [<B><S>public institution of</S></B> 6 <B><S>higher education</S></B>] <B><U>college, as defined in subdivision two of section six</U></B> 7 <B><U>hundred one of this title,</U></B> leading to a career as a teacher in public 8 elementary or secondary education shall be eligible for an award under 9 this section, provided the applicant: (a) earned an undergraduate degree 10 from a college located in New York state; (b) was a New York state resi- 11 dent while earning such undergraduate degree; (c) achieved academic 12 excellence as an undergraduate student, as defined by the corporation in 13 regulation; (d) enrolls in full-time study in an approved master's 14 degree in education program at a New York state [<B><S>public institution of</S></B> 15 <B><S>higher education</S></B>] <B><U>college, as defined in subdivision two of section six</U></B> 16 <B><U>hundred one of this title,</U></B> leading to a career as a teacher in public 17 elementary or secondary education; (e) signs a contract with the corpo- 18 ration agreeing to teach in a classroom setting on a full-time basis for 19 five years in a school located within New York state providing public 20 elementary or secondary education recognized by the board of regents or 21 the university of the state of New York, including charter schools 22 authorized pursuant to article fifty-six of this chapter; and (f) 23 complies with the applicable provisions of this article and all require- EXPLANATION--Matter in <B><U>italics</U></B> (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [<B><S> </S></B>] is old law to be omitted. Preference for the award of</U></B> 4 <B><U>scholarships shall be given to eligible students matriculated at public</U></B> 5 <B><U>colleges, as defined in subdivision two of section six hundred one of</U></B> 6 <B><U>this title, in New York state. Remaining scholarships may be awarded to</U></B> 7 <B><U>other eligible students matriculated at private colleges, as defined in</U></B> 8 <B><U>subdivision two of section six hundred one of this title, in New York</U></B> 9 <B><U>state.</U></B> 10 § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
