<PRE WIDTH="200"> Assembly Resolution No. 408 <B>BY:</B> M. of A. Lavine <B>COMMEMORATING</B> May 1, 2025, as Law Day in the State of New York <B>WHEREAS,</B> The rule of law is the foundation of American rights and liberties, and it plays a vital role in preserving freedom, justice, and equality; and <B>WHEREAS,</B> Since its establishment in 1958 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Law Day has been observed annually on May 1st to celebrate the importance of the legal system and to enhance the public's understanding of the law and its role in society; and <B>WHEREAS,</B> Law Day provides an opportunity for Americans to reflect on the fundamental principles of liberty, justice, and equality under the law; to recognize the work of lawyers, judges, and others in the legal profession who strive to uphold these ideals; and <B>WHEREAS,</B> The American Bar Association has designated the 2025 Law Day theme as "Voices of Democracy", encouraging citizens to participate in the democratic process, appreciate diverse perspectives, and reinforce the importance of civic dialogue in a free society governed by the rule of law; and <B>WHEREAS,</B> Legal organizations, schools, civic groups, and government institutions throughout New York State observe Law Day with educational programs, ceremonies, and events to promote public understanding of the law and the legal process; and <B>WHEREAS,</B> The New York State Legislature recognizes the importance of Law Day as an occasion to reaffirm our shared commitment to justice and the constitutional principles that govern our democratic system; now, therefore, be it <B>RESOLVED,</B> That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to commemorate May 1, 2025, as Law Day in the State of New York, and to encourage all New Yorkers to reflect on the enduring importance of the rule of law in maintaining our democratic institutions and protecting individual rights.
