4040 An Act relating to schools; permitting schools to
4141 create teacher-to-student mentorship programs;
4242 providing purpose of mentorship program; directing
4343 school district to develop pro gram guidelines and
4444 eligibility criteria; listing program requirements;
4545 stating teacher participation in the program is
4646 voluntary; limiting number of students per teacher
4747 mentor; establishing compensation for teac her
4848 mentors; providing for codification; and providing an
4949 effective date.

5656 BE IT ENACTED BY THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA:
5757 SECTION 1. NEW LAW A new section of law to be codified
5858 in the Oklahoma Statutes as Section 1210.527-1 of Title 70, unless
5959 there is created a duplication in numbering, reads as follows:
6060 A. Schools may create teacher-to-student mentorship programs to
6161 provide emotional, academic, and coping assistance to students who
6262 have challenges at home and school.
6363 B. A school district shall develop guidelines and eligibility
6464 criteria for the mentorship program which are specific to the u nique
6565 faculty and student population of the school district.

9292 C. The mentorship program shall:
9393 1. Require written permis sion by the parent or legal guardian
9494 of the student allowing the teacher to:
9595 a. access school records and files of the student, and
9696 b. schedule regular meetings with the student;
9797 2. Include regularly scheduled meetings and conferences with
9898 the parent or legal guardian of the student to provide updates and
9999 progress reports on the status of the mentorship; and
100100 3. Establish procedures for students who need to meet
101101 immediately with their mentor teachers . If the school administrator
102102 is unable to schedule a time for the student to meet with the mentor
103103 teacher, another teacher may act as a subs titute mentor teacher.
104104 The substitute mentor teacher shall be compensated on a prorated
105105 amount the teacher would be paid for regular instructional time.
106106 D. Teachers shall not be required to participate in the
107107 mentorship program. If a teacher chooses to serve as a mentor , the
108108 teacher shall:
109109 1. Only be permitted to serve as a mentor to up to three (3)
110110 students each school year; and
111111 2. Be compensated Two Thousand Dollars ($2,000.00) per
112112 mentoring student each school year. This compensation shall be in
113113 addition to the annual salary of the teacher in the form of extra -
114114 duty pay.
