75	75	BE IT ENACTED BY THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA:
76	76	SECTION 1. NEW LAW A new secti on of law not to be
77	77	codified in the Oklahoma Statutes reads as follows:
78	78	The American Quarter Horse ’s name is derived from its ability to
79	79	outrun other horse breeds in races of one -quarter (1/4) mile or
80	80	less; some have been clocked at speeds of up to fifty -five (55)
81	81	miles per hour. In addition, the American Quarter Horse is known as
82	82	a quick and smart cow horse and is the most popular breed of horse
83	83	in the United States today. For nearly fifty (50) years, the
84	84	American Quarter Horse Association has held its w orld championship
85	85	show in Oklahoma City.
86	86	The Colonial Spanish Horse of Oklahoma has deep , rich ties to
87	87	the American Quarter Horse. The Colonial Spanish Horse was br ought

140	140	pure Spanish Mustangs, a relatively small but tough breed of horse.
141	141	After the introduction of these horses to Native American tribes,
142	142	the horses became essential to the tribes, and th ey began to rely
143	143	heavily on them for thei r travels during tim es of war and hardship,
144	144	as well as for hunting. In addition, the Native American tribes
145	145	utilized the Colonial Spanish Horse to traverse the Trail of Tears.
146	146	The Colonial Spanish Horse of Oklahom a is the only native horse and
147	147	has the purest bloodline in th e state. There is evidence th at the
148	148	Spanish Mustangs obtained from the Native American tribes were
149	149	crossed with the English colonists ’ stock as early as the year 1611.
150	150	The product of this breed ing would come to be known as the America n
151	151	Quarter Horse.
152	152	Currently, Oklahoma is fifth in the nation in total horse
153	153	members, behind only Texas, California, Florida, and Ohio. Horses
154	154	in Oklahoma are used for diverse purposes with forty -four percent
155	155	(44%) privately owned, seventeen percent (17%) used for showing, and
156	156	seventeen percent (17% ) used for racing. The predominant horse
157	157	breed in Oklahoma is the American Quarter Horse. The American Horse
158	158	Council estimates about one hundred four thousand (104,000) American
159	159	Quarter Horses were in Oklahoma in 2017. Oklahoma was listed second
160	160	in the United States in total number of American Quarter Horse s.
161	161	For the reasons listed above, th e American Quarter Horse deserves to
162	162	be designated as the state horse of Oklahoma.

215	215	in the Oklahoma Statutes as Section 98.21 of Title 25, unless there
216	216	is created a duplication i n numbering, reads as follows:
217	217	The American Quarter Hor se is hereby designated and adopted as
218	218	the state horse of the State of Oklahoma.
219	219	SECTION 3. This act shall become effective November 1, 2022.
