4040 An Act relating to Higher Education; creating the
4141 Sergeant CJ Nelson Legacy Act; amending 70 O.S. 2021 ,
4242 Section 3218.7-1, which relates to waiver of room and
4343 board fees for children of commissioned members of
4444 Oklahoma Law Enforcement; directing for the waiver of
4545 room and board fees for sur viving children of first
4646 responders who have given their lives in the line of
4747 duty; setting time period; defining terms; directing
4848 for waiver of career technology district fees for
4949 surviving children of first re sponder who have given
5050 their lives in the line of duty; setting time period;
5151 defining terms; providing for noncodification; and
5252 providing an effecti ve date.

5858 BE IT ENACTED BY THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA:
5959 SECTION 1. NEW LAW A new section of law not to be
6060 codified in the Oklahoma Statutes reads as follows:
6161 This act shall be kn own and may be cited as "The Sergeant CJ
6262 Nelson Legacy Act".
6363 SECTION 2. AMENDATORY 70 O.S. 2021, Section 3218.7-1, is

9191 Section 3218.7-1 A. Within The Oklahoma State System of Higher
9292 Education, no fees nor room and board shall be charged t o the
9393 children:
9494 1. Children of Oklahoma peace officers as defined by Section
9595 648 of Title 21 of the Oklahoma Stat utes who have given their lives
9696 in the line of duty;
9797 2. Children of Oklahoma firefighters who have given t heir lives
9898 in the line of duty;
9999 3. Children of commissioned members of the Oklahoma Law
100100 Enforcement Retirement System , who have given their lives in the
101101 line of duty; and
102102 4. Children of Oklahoma emergency medical techn icians who have
103103 given their lives in the line of duty.
104104 B. Such waiver of room and board shal l be limited to a period
105105 of five (5) years.
106106 C. Such waiver of room and board shall be a servic e benefit of
107107 a commissioned member of the Oklahoma Law Enforcement R etirement
108108 System.
109109 D. For purposes of this section:
110110 1. "Firefighter" means a volunteer firefighter or a permanent
111111 salaried professional member of any fire department within the State
112112 of Oklahoma; and
113113 2. "Emergency medical technician " means a person volunte ering
114114 or employed as an emergency medical technician and who is licen sed

141141 as an emergency medical technician pursuant to Section 1-2505 of
142142 Title 63 of the Oklahoma Statute s.
143143 SECTION 3. NEW LAW A new section of law to be codified
144144 in the Oklahoma Statutes as Section 14-134.1 of Title 70, unless
145145 there is created a duplication in numbering, reads as follows:
146146 A. Within the system of career technology districts, no fees
147147 shall be charged to:
148148 1. Children of Oklahoma peace officers as defin ed by Section 648
149149 of Title 21 of the Oklahoma Statutes who have given their lives in
150150 the line of duty;
151151 2. Children of Oklahoma firefighters who have given their lives
152152 in the line of duty;
153153 3. Children of commissioned members of the Oklahoma Law
154154 Enforcement Retirement System, who have given their lives in the
155155 line of duty; and
156156 4. Children of Oklahom a emergency medical technicians who have
157157 given their lives in the line of duty.
158158 B. Such waiver of room and board shall be limited to a period
159159 of five (5) years.
160160 C. Such waiver of room and board sha ll be a service benefit of
161161 a commissioned member of the O klahoma Law Enforcement Retirement
162162 System.

190190 1. "Firefighter" means a volunteer fi refighter or a permanent
