40	40	An Act relating to school curriculum; directing the
41	41	State Department of Education in certain consultat ion
42	42	to develop curriculum related to Native American
43	43	history and culture for students in certain grades;
44	44	requiring Native American history and culture be
45	45	taught in public schools beginning in certain school
46	46	year; allowing curriculum on Native American history
47	47	and culture to be integrated in courses; directing
48	48	the State Department of Education to develop certain
49	49	professional learning opportunities; providing for
50	50	codification; providing an effective date; and

58	58	BE IT ENACTED BY THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF OKLAH OMA:
59	59	SECTION 1. NEW LAW A new section of law to be codified
60	60	in the Oklahoma Statutes as S ection 11-103.6p of Title 70, unless
61	61	there is created a duplication in numbering, reads as follows:
62	62	A. The State Department of Education, in consultation with
63	63	experts in Native American history and culture , shall develop and
64	64	make available to public schools curriculum related to Native
65	65	American history and culture for grade-appropriate instruction of
66	66	students in grades six through twelve.

93	93	B. Beginning in the 2023-2024 school year, Native American
94	94	history and culture shall be taught to students in grades six
95	95	through twelve in public schools in this state , as prescribed in the
96	96	Oklahoma Academic Standards . Native American history and culture
97	97	may be integrated into one or more existing courses of study and
98	98	shall be taught in a manner that:
99	99	1. Generates an understanding of the experiences and
100	100	contributions of Native Americans to Ameri can history and culture ;
101	101	2. Develops dialogue with students on the ramifications of
102	102	bullying, bigotry, stereotyping, and discrimination; and
103	103	3. Encourages tolerance of diversity and reverence for human
104	104	dignity for all citizens in a pluralistic socie ty.
105	105	C. The State Department of Education, in consultation with
106	106	experts in Native American hist ory and culture, shall develop and
107	107	implement high quality professional learning opportunities for
108	108	teachers covering Native American history and culture .
109	109	SECTION 2. This act shall become effective July 1, 2023.
110	110	SECTION 3. It being immediately necessary for the preservation
111	111	of the public peace, health or safety, an emergency is hereby
112	112	declared to exist, by reason whereof thi s act shall take effect and
113	113	be in full force from and after its passage and approval.
