4040 An Act relating to school curriculum; directing the
4141 State Department of Education in certain consultat ion
4242 to develop curriculum related to Native American
4343 history and culture for students in certain grades;
4444 requiring Native American history and culture be
4545 taught in public schools beginning in certain school
4646 year; allowing curriculum on Native American history
4747 and culture to be integrated in courses; directing
4848 the State Department of Education to develop certain
4949 professional learning opportunities; providing for
5050 codification; providing an effective date; and
5151 declaring an emergency.

5858 BE IT ENACTED BY THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF OKLAH OMA:
5959 SECTION 1. NEW LAW A new section of law to be codified
6060 in the Oklahoma Statutes as S ection 11-103.6p of Title 70, unless
6161 there is created a duplication in numbering, reads as follows:
6262 A. The State Department of Education, in consultation with
6363 experts in Native American history and culture , shall develop and
6464 make available to public schools curriculum related to Native
6565 American history and culture for grade-appropriate instruction of
6666 students in grades six through twelve.

9393 B. Beginning in the 2023-2024 school year, Native American
9494 history and culture shall be taught to students in grades six
9595 through twelve in public schools in this state , as prescribed in the
9696 Oklahoma Academic Standards . Native American history and culture
9797 may be integrated into one or more existing courses of study and
9898 shall be taught in a manner that:
9999 1. Generates an understanding of the experiences and
100100 contributions of Native Americans to Ameri can history and culture ;
101101 2. Develops dialogue with students on the ramifications of
102102 bullying, bigotry, stereotyping, and discrimination; and
103103 3. Encourages tolerance of diversity and reverence for human
104104 dignity for all citizens in a pluralistic socie ty.
105105 C. The State Department of Education, in consultation with
106106 experts in Native American hist ory and culture, shall develop and
107107 implement high quality professional learning opportunities for
108108 teachers covering Native American history and culture .
109109 SECTION 2. This act shall become effective July 1, 2023.
110110 SECTION 3. It being immediately necessary for the preservation
111111 of the public peace, health or safety, an emergency is hereby
112112 declared to exist, by reason whereof thi s act shall take effect and
113113 be in full force from and after its passage and approval.
