77	77	BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTA TIVES OF THE
78	78	2ND SESSION OF THE 59TH OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE:
79	79	SECTION 1. The Secretary of State shall refer to the people for
80	80	their approval or rejection, as and in the manne r provided by law,
81	81	the following proposed amendment to Section 2 of Article VII of the
82	82	Oklahoma Constitution to read as follows:
83	83	Section 2. The Supreme Court shall consist of nine Justices
84	84	until the number shall be changed by statute and each Justice shal l
85	85	be from a separate district of the State. Each district shall
86	86	remain as presently cons tituted until otherwise provided by Statute.
87	87	The terms of office of the Justices o f the Supreme Court shall be
88	88	six years and shall commence on the second Monday of Ja nuary

140	140	following their election. Any Justice who is elected to office
141	141	after the effective date of this amendment shall be eligible to
142	142	serve no more than twelve (12) years on the Supreme Court. The
143	143	years served by any Justice appointed or elected to serve less than
144	144	a full term to fill a vacancy in office shall not be in cluded in the
145	145	twelve-year limitation set forth herein; but no Justice who has
146	146	completed twelve (12) years in office shall thereafter be eligible
147	147	to serve a partial term. Any Justice who is serving a term in
148	148	office or who has been elected or appointed to serve a term in
149	149	office on the effective date of this amendment shall be entitled to
150	150	complete his or her term and shall be eligible to serve an
151	151	additional twelve (12) years thereafter. Those appointed or elected
152	152	to fill vacancies shall assume office immediately upon qualifying
153	153	for the office. Each Justice, at the time of his election or
154	154	appointment, shall have atta ined the age of thirty years, shall have
155	155	been a qualified elector in the distric t for at least one year
156	156	immediately prior to the date of filing or appointment, and shall
157	157	have been a licensed practicing attorney or judge of a court of
158	158	record, or both, in Oklahoma for five years preceding his election
159	159	or appointment and shall continue to be a duly licensed attorney
160	160	while in office to be eligible to hold the office. The Justices
161	161	shall choose from among their members a Chief Justice and a Vice
162	162	Chief Justice.

220	220	This measure would amend Section 2 of Article 7 of the Oklahoma
221	221	Constitution. The measure would impose a term limit of 12 years
222	222	on Justices of the Su preme Court. It allows members to serve
223	223	more than 12 years if filling a vacancy for a partial term. It
224	224	allows Justices serving when this measure is approved to finish
225	225	a term then serve 12 additional years.
