1953 WHEREAS, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a chronic cardiac
2054 disease involving thickening of the heart muscle and can potentially
2155 lead to debilitating symptoms and serious complications including
2256 heart failure, atrial fibrillation, stroke, and in rare cases sudden
2357 cardiac death; and

2558 WHEREAS, HCM is the most common inheritable heart disease and
2659 can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or ethnic ity with a
2760 reported prevalence ranging from 1 in 200 to 1 in 500 in the general
2861 population; and

3062 WHEREAS, an estimated 700,000 to 1,650,000 people in the United
3163 States have HCM, yet 85% of them may remain undiagnosed; and

3391 WHEREAS, HCM shares symptoms with o ther common cardiovas cular
3492 and pulmonary diseases, such as shortness of breath, chest pain,
3593 fatigue, palpitations, and fainting, making it difficult to
3694 distinguish HCM from these other diseases; and

3895 WHEREAS, when untreated, all-caused mortality risk is 3 t o 4
3996 times higher in patients with HCM than that of the general

4298 WHEREAS, knowing one's medical history and any signs and
4399 symptoms of HCM is an important first step in receiving an accurate
44100 diagnosis of HCM; and

47101 WHEREAS, a health care provide r must conduct a thorough
48102 screening with cardiac health questions to help identify a risk of
49103 cardiac disorders both genetic and congenital; and

51104 WHEREAS, a health care provider may conduct several tests,
52105 including an echocardiogram, a cardiac MRI, or geneti c testing to
53106 confirm a family history of HCM, and must examine the heart to
54107 diagnose HCM; and

56108 WHEREAS, following a diagnosis of HCM, it is important for
57109 patients to work with their health care provider to learn more about
58110 their disease and understand diffe rent management options, including
59111 prescription medications and surgical treatment options that may
60112 help; and

62113 WHEREAS, the fourth Wednesday in February is an appropriate day
63114 to observe Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day.

65142 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLV ED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
66143 OF THE 1ST SESSION OF THE 60TH OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE:

68144 THAT the fourth Wednesday, February 26, 2025, is hereby
69145 recognized by the Oklahoma House of Representatives and the State of
70146 Oklahoma as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awa reness Day, in order to
71147 raise public awareness about hypertrophic cardiomyopathy .

73148 THAT the Oklahoma House of Representatives acknowledges the
74149 critical importance of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy awareness to
75150 improve cardiovascular health in the State of Okla homa.

77151 THAT the Oklahoma House of Representatives supports raising
78152 awareness of the consequences of undiagnosed and untreated
79153 hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and the need to seek appropriate care
80154 for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy as a serious public health issue .
