42	42	A Resolution recognizing March 17, 2025, as Profound
43	43	Autism Day at the State Capitol; and expressing the
44	44	importance of awareness and support for profound

52	52	WHEREAS, the definition of autism has evolved over the years,
53	53	creating an increasingly heterogenous spectrum; and
54	54	WHEREAS, while the entire spectrum deserves recognition and
55	55	support, profound autism is a t erm intended to provide clarification
56	56	about the autistic people who require 24/7 car e from an adult
57	57	caregiver throughout his or her life; and
58	58	WHEREAS, people with profound autism also can have a severe
59	59	intellectual disability or have minimal or no language ; and
60	60	WHEREAS, individuals with profound autism are frequently
61	61	excluded from research and support programs because of his or her
62	62	unique needs; and

89	89	WHEREAS, the Centers for Disease Control released their first
90	90	prevalence study on profound autism in April 20 23; and
91	91	WHEREAS, the research concluded that the percentage of 8 -year-
92	92	old children with profound autism among those with autism in the
93	93	United States was 26.7%. This means that 1 in 4 children with
94	94	autism have profound autism; and
95	95	WHEREAS, compared with children with non–profound autism,
96	96	children with profound autism were more likely to be female, from
97	97	racial and ethnic minority groups, of low socioeconomic status, born
98	98	preterm or with low birth weight, have self -injurious behaviors,
99	99	have seizure disorders, and have lower adaptive scores; and
100	100	WHEREAS, people with profound autism and those who care for them
101	101	live in our midst, frequently in isolation, and need our inclusion
102	102	and support. Specific consideration of their unique challenge is
103	103	critical.
104	104	NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
105	105	OF THE 1ST SESSION OF THE 60TH OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE:
106	106	THAT Monday, March 17th, 2025 is hereby recognized by the
107	107	Oklahoma House of Representatives and the State of Oklahoma as
108	108	Profound Autism Day, in order to raise public awareness and support
109	109	for profound autism within our communities and within our state.
