4242 Adha as days of observance in Oklahoma
4343 Recognizing the Muslim American community in
4444 Oklahoma; and celebrating the contributions of
4545 this community in the state of Oklahoma and the

5252 WHEREAS, Muslims celebrate two Eid "festivals" every lunar
5353 year, Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha; and
5454 WHEREAS, Eid Al-Fitr, or "festival of breaking of the fast,"
5555 is celebrated first at the conclusion of the Muslim holy month
5656 of Ramadan; and
5757 WHEREAS, Muslims in the United States observe this time of
5858 sacrifice and contemplation by fasting, reading the Holy Qur 'an,
5959 participating in charity work and worship , and emphasizing self -

8686 WHEREAS, Eid Al-Adha, the "feast of the sacrifice, " is
8787 celebrated two months later and commemorates Abraham 's
8888 willingness to sacrifice his son; and
8989 WHEREAS, Eid Al-Adha is the most sacred of the two Eid
9090 holidays, and centers around the importance of sacrifice and
9191 giving back for family, community, an d the neediest amongst us;
9292 it often coincides with the completion of the Hajj or pilgrimage
9393 that is attended by millions of Muslims each year ; and
9494 WHEREAS, Muslim Americans in our communities make
9595 significant contributions to our State in such areas as
9696 medicine, science, engineering, commerce, economics, sports,
9797 education, and law; and
9898 WHEREAS, One percent of our statewide population in Oklahoma
9999 identify as Muslim; and
100100 WHEREAS, Encouraging all State residents to recognize the
101101 significance of the two Eid hol idays will lead to greater
102102 understanding within our communities .
103103 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
104104 REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 1ST SESSION OF THE 60TH OKLAHOMA
105105 LEGISLATURE:
106106 THAT Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha shall be designated as days
107107 of observance in the State of Oklahoma to recognize and
108108 celebrate their importance to the Muslim residents in our
109109 communities.
