43	43	Recognizing the Muslim American community in
44	44	Oklahoma; and celebrating the contributions of
45	45	this community in the state of Oklahoma and the

52	52	WHEREAS, Muslims celebrate two Eid "festivals" every lunar
53	53	year, Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha; and
54	54	WHEREAS, Eid Al-Fitr, or "festival of breaking of the fast,"
55	55	is celebrated first at the conclusion of the Muslim holy month
56	56	of Ramadan; and
57	57	WHEREAS, Muslims in the United States observe this time of
58	58	sacrifice and contemplation by fasting, reading the Holy Qur 'an,
59	59	participating in charity work and worship , and emphasizing self -
60	60	discipline; and

86	86	WHEREAS, Eid Al-Adha, the "feast of the sacrifice, " is
87	87	celebrated two months later and commemorates Abraham 's
88	88	willingness to sacrifice his son; and
89	89	WHEREAS, Eid Al-Adha is the most sacred of the two Eid
90	90	holidays, and centers around the importance of sacrifice and
91	91	giving back for family, community, an d the neediest amongst us;
92	92	it often coincides with the completion of the Hajj or pilgrimage
93	93	that is attended by millions of Muslims each year ; and
94	94	WHEREAS, Muslim Americans in our communities make
95	95	significant contributions to our State in such areas as
96	96	medicine, science, engineering, commerce, economics, sports,
97	97	education, and law; and
98	98	WHEREAS, One percent of our statewide population in Oklahoma
99	99	identify as Muslim; and
100	100	WHEREAS, Encouraging all State residents to recognize the
101	101	significance of the two Eid hol idays will lead to greater
102	102	understanding within our communities .
103	103	NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
104	104	REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 1ST SESSION OF THE 60TH OKLAHOMA
105	105	LEGISLATURE:
106	106	THAT Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha shall be designated as days
107	107	of observance in the State of Oklahoma to recognize and
108	108	celebrate their importance to the Muslim residents in our
109	109	communities.
