5350 WHEREAS, frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a form of dementia
5451 caused by progressive nerve cell loss in the brain's frontal and
5552 temporal lobes, which variably causes deterioration in behavio r,
5653 personality, and/or difficulty with producing or comprehending
5754 language; and
5855 WHEREAS, according to the Association for Frontotemporal
5956 Degeneration, FTD is frequently misdiagnosed as Alzheimer's,
6057 depression, Parkinson's disease, or a psychiatric conditio n. On
6158 average, it currently takes 3.6 years to get an accurate diagnosis;
6259 and
60+WHEREAS, most FTD cases occur between the ages of 45 and 64.
61+Therefore, FTD has a potentially substantially greater impact on
62+work, family, and finances; and

90-WHEREAS, most FTD cases occur between the ages of 45 and 64.
91-Therefore, FTD has a potentially substantially greater impact on
92-work, family, and finances; and
9389 WHEREAS, the economic burden of FTD is estimated to be $120,000
9490 per year per family; and
9591 WHEREAS, FTD may affect a person's ability to express emotions
9692 and to show affection and empathy; and
9793 WHEREAS, in the behavioral variant of FTD, a person's
9894 personality may be significant ly changed and this could manifest as
9995 impaired judgment and responding to social situations in a way that
10096 may be considered inappropriate; and
10197 WHEREAS, in the language variants of FTD (primary progressive
10298 aphasia), a person may have difficulty producing sp eech and
10399 understanding grammar, lose the meaning of words or become hesitant
104100 in their speech, and may eventually become non -verbal; and
105101 WHEREAS, today, there is no cure for FTD, and no current
106102 treatments available to slow or stop the progression of the dis ease;
107103 and
108104 WHEREAS, the last week of September has been declared World
109105 Frontotemporal Dementia Awareness Week to raise funds to improve
110106 care and support options, support research for treatments and
111107 ultimately a cure.
112108 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HO USE OF REPRESENTATIVES

142-recognized by the Oklahoma House of Representatives and the State of
143138 Oklahoma as Frontotemporal Dementia Awareness Week, in o rder to
144139 raise public awareness about frontotemporal dementia.
145140 THAT the Oklahoma House of Representatives acknowledges the
146141 critical importance of frontotemporal dementia awareness to improve
147142 brain health in the State of Oklahoma and for research to find a
148143 treatment and possibly a cure .
149144 THAT the Oklahoma House of Representatives supports ra ising
150145 awareness of the consequences of undiagnosed and misdiagnosed
151146 frontotemporal dementia and the need for appropriate care for
152147 individuals with frontotemporal dementia .
