237 | 233 | | 4. “Advanced procedure” means a dental procedure for which a |

240 | 236 | | 5. “Board” means the Board of Dentistry; |

241 | 237 | | 6. “Certified dental assistant” means a dental assistant who |

242 | 238 | | has earned and maintains current certified dental assistant |

---|
244 | 240 | | 7. “Coronal polishing” means a procedure limited to the removal |
---|
245 | 241 | | of plaque and stain from exposed tooth surfaces, utilizing a slow |
---|
246 | 242 | | speed hand piece with a prophy/polishing cup or brush and polishing |
---|
247 | 243 | | agent and is not prophylaxis. To be considered prophylaxis, |
---|
248 | 244 | | examination for calculus and scaling must be done by a dental |
---|

284 | 279 | | 9. “Dentistry” means the practice of dentistry in all of its |

286 | 281 | | 10. “Dentist” means a graduate of an accredited dental college |
---|
287 | 282 | | who has been issued a license by the Board to practice dentistry as |
---|
288 | 283 | | defined in Section 328.19 of this title; |
---|
289 | 284 | | 11. “Dental ambulatory surgical center (DASC)” means a facility |
---|
290 | 285 | | that operates exclusively for the purpose of furnishing outpatient |
---|
291 | 286 | | surgical services to patients. A DASC shall have the same |
---|
292 | 287 | | privileges and requirements as a d ental office and additionally must |
---|
293 | 288 | | be an accredited facility by the appropriate entity; |
---|
294 | 289 | | 12. “Dental appliance” means a dental appliance, prosthetic |
---|
295 | 290 | | denture, bridge, restoration , or other device made for an individual |
---|
296 | 291 | | patient for a purpose listed in Sectio n 328.19 of this title; |
---|
297 | 292 | | 13. “Dental office” means an establishment owned and operated |
---|
298 | 293 | | by a dentist for the practice of dentistry, which may be composed of |
---|
299 | 294 | | reception rooms, business offices, private offices, laboratories, |
---|
300 | 295 | | and dental operating rooms where d ental operations are performed; |

335 | 329 | | and has been issued a license by the Board and who is authorized to |
---|
336 | 330 | | practice dental hygiene as defined in this section; |

337 | 331 | | 15. 16. “Dental assistant” or “oral maxillofacial surgery |
---|
338 | 332 | | assistant” means an individual working for a dentist, under the |
---|
339 | 333 | | dentist’s direct supervision or direct visual supervision, and |
---|
340 | 334 | | performing duties in th e dental office or a treatment facility |
---|
341 | 335 | | including the limited treatment of patients in accordance with the |
---|
342 | 336 | | provisions of the State Dental Act. A dental assistant or oral |
---|
343 | 337 | | maxillofacial surgery assistant may assist a dentist with the |
---|
344 | 338 | | patient; provided, this shall be done only under the direct |
---|
345 | 339 | | supervision or direct visual supervision and control of the dentist |
---|
346 | 340 | | and only in accordance with the educational requirements and rules |
---|
347 | 341 | | promulgated by the Board; |

348 | 342 | | 16. 17. “Dental laboratory” means a location, whether in a |
---|

386 | 379 | | of dental restorations, appliances or other devices to be worn in a |

388 | 381 | | 19. 20. “Dental specialty” means a specialized practice of a |
---|
389 | 382 | | branch of dentistry, recognized by the Board, where the dental |
---|
390 | 383 | | college and specialty program are accredited by the Commission on |
---|
391 | 384 | | Dental Accreditation (CODA), or a dental specialty recognized by the |
---|
392 | 385 | | Board, requiring a minimum number of hours of approved education and |
---|
393 | 386 | | training and/or recognition by a nationa lly recognized association |
---|
394 | 387 | | or accreditation board; |
---|
395 | 388 | | 20. 21. “Direct supervision” means the supervisory dentist is |
---|
396 | 389 | | in the dental office or treatment facility and, during the |
---|
397 | 390 | | appointment, personally examines the patient, diagnoses any |
---|
398 | 391 | | conditions to be treate d, and authorizes the procedures to be |
---|
399 | 392 | | performed by a dental hygienist , or dental assistant, or oral |
---|

---|

440 | 432 | | 23. 24. “Fellowship” means a program designed for post - |
---|
441 | 433 | | residency graduates to gain knowledge and experience in a |
---|
442 | 434 | | specialized field; |
---|
443 | 435 | | 24. 25. “General anesthesia” means a drug -induced loss of |
---|
444 | 436 | | consciousness during which patients are not arou sable, even by |
---|
445 | 437 | | painful stimulation. The ability to independently maintain |
---|
446 | 438 | | ventilator function is often impaired. Patients often require |
---|
447 | 439 | | assistance in maintaining a patent airway, and positive pressure |
---|
448 | 440 | | ventilation may be required because of depressed spon taneous |
---|
449 | 441 | | ventilation or drug-induced depression of neuromuscular function. |

1194 | 1171 | | satisfactory, the Board shall notify the applicant to appear for the |

1195 | 1172 | | jurisprudence examination at the time and place to be fixed by the |
---|
1196 | 1173 | | Board. A dental student or a dental hygiene student in the |
---|
1197 | 1174 | | student’s last semester of a dental or dental hygiene program, |
---|
1198 | 1175 | | having met all other requirements, may make application and take the |
---|
1199 | 1176 | | jurisprudence examination with a letter from the dean of the dental |
---|
1200 | 1177 | | school or director of the hygiene program stating that the applicant |
---|
1201 | 1178 | | is a candidate for graduation within the next six (6) months. |
---|
1202 | 1179 | | F. The Board shall require every applicant for a license to |
---|
1203 | 1180 | | practice dentistry or dental hygiene to submit, for the files of the |
---|
1204 | 1181 | | Board, a copy of a dental degree or dental hygiene degree, an |
---|
1205 | 1182 | | official transcript, a recent photograph duly identified and |
---|
1206 | 1183 | | attested, and any other information as required by the Board. |

1345 | 1319 | | 4. All advanced procedures shall be added to the dental hygiene |

1347 | 1321 | | J. All licensees and permit holders shall display the current |
---|
1348 | 1322 | | permit or license in a visible p lace within the dental office or |
---|
1349 | 1323 | | treatment facility. |

1350 | 1324 | | K. The Board shall have the authority to temporarily change |

1351 | 1325 | | requirements of an examination due to availability or changes in the |

1553 | 1523 | | H. Any person having served in the military as a dental |

1554 | 1524 | | assistant shall receive crede ntialing and reciprocity for expanded |

1555 | 1525 | | functions by demonstrating the following: |
